Ben Bernanke – A Risk Taker is Minding the Store

It’s national “Banker Horoscope” month, in case you didn’t know. Since Wall Street tends to crash in the month of October, it was determined by the National Astrology Awareness Department that October would be the month that astrologers should blog about bankers.

Ben Bernanke is the current Chairman of the Federal Reserve, the entity that serves as a central bank for the United States. Running the Federal Reserve is a great responsibility as its decisions drive fiscal policy.

Much to my surprise, the man heading the Federal Reserve has zero (0) planets in earth signs. You’d think someone dealing with the practical matter of fiscal policy would have these grounded, material signs in his chart.

In a way it makes sense. The US went off the gold standard back in the 1971. If the greenback isn’t backed by earth product, why should the man heading its fate?

Bernanke has sun in mutable fire Sagittarius and moon in mutable water Pisces. I have to stop here and wonder if this is a man who even balances his own checkbook. He can, of course, but does he?

The combination of Sagittarius and Pisces creates an expansive, generous dreamer. This is a risk-taking personality with thin emotional boundaries. Jupiter is Gemini opposing the sun creates additional excess to an already gregarious, exuberant personality.

Sagittarius and Pisces say “yes” to some more pie, one more day off work and spending that last $10 on the slot machine.

Sagittarius and Pisces often say “no” to set appointment times, boring routine and stopping after just one drink.

I would love Bernanke’s personality if I wasn’t aware of his role in the economy. Yikes, what to do?

To give a sense of Bernanke’s risk-taking personality, let’s take a look at someone born just 18 days before him – Jeffrey Skilling.

Do you remember Jeffrey Skilling? You probably haven’t heard much from him lately as he is serving a 24-year prison sentence for felonies committed during his time as President of Enron. Skilling, with sun in Sagittarius and moon probably in Leo was a competitive, energetic risk taker.

Reading the Enron story is really reading a primer of 101 Ways to Cook the Books. I don’t believe Enron was a lone wolf in this regard. The optimism of Pluto in Sagittarius made the mountain climbing business people think the peak experience would last forever.

On paper, everything lasts forever! In the world of physical reality, debt must be paid off eventually.

Back to Bernanke, who also has Neptune conjunct Mars in Libra, which indicates a romantic and poetic soul.

If I meet Bernanke I’m going to ask why he didn’t become a traveling folk singer rather than a banker. He would have had more sex that way, which would probably be pleasing to someone with Saturn in Scorpio.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out how this man found his way into such a Capricornian institution. Sagittarius likes high stakes so maybe running the Federal Reserve is more exciting than it appears. It’s certainly important, but I wouldn’t guess it to be exciting.

In looking at the chart of the Federal Reserve itself, it appeared that this institution will be going through some radical changes. Now it makes sense since the man heading it is far from conservative, at least in his fundamental personality (versus political ideology).

Bernanke seems to be a really fun, laid-back kind of guy. He’s the kind of guy you meet at the bar, the day your car breaks down, your wife leaves you and your dog runs away. You stop for a beer after work, something you stopped doing since the wife clamped down on it.

Bernanke’s the guy sitting next to you who listens, makes you laugh and even lends you a twenty. Talking to him you feel it’s okay to have another beer after a day like you’ve had. There’s no judgment. He allows you to be who you are.

Bernanke’s an okay guy. But is he the guy you want running the money supply?
