Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony – INTENSE and intense

There are so many break ups in the world. Maybe following Hollywood breakups is just a way to express our emotions about the break ups around us.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are now calling it quits. As is my habit, I took a look at their charts.

While there are always many different aspects at play between any two individuals, at first glance of the two charts nothing popped out as “it” for why they might have broken up.

But that may be the very reason they broke up – nothing “it” enough to stay together. From the AP story I read, it appears they are parting amicably.

Rather than using left-brain analytical astrological talk, I thought I’d take the Chinese approach to looking at their charts. Chinese astrology, like Western, bases its imagery on the elements. Often the description of personality and behavior is more poetic and tied to those natural images.

First, the facts.

Lopez has sun and Mercury in Leo and squaring moon and Neptune in Scorpio. Saturn in Taurus squares the sun and Mercury. Her Mars is in Sagittarius, Venus in Gemini, Pluto in Virgo and Uranus/Jupiter conjunct in Libra.

Leo is a fixed fire sign. Scorpio is a fixed water sign. Combined is very INTENSE.

Anthony has five planets in Virgo (Jupiter, Pluto, sun and Uranus) and moon in Cancer. He’s also got a little bit of fire (Mars in Leo and Saturn in Aries) and little bit of air (Mercury and Venus in Libra). Anthony is also intense, but lowercase and in a different way.

Now the poetry, modern-style.

Lopez is both like a constant, strong flame such as the sun and also like fixed water such as a block of ice. Combined I think of the icy patch you use when you sprain a muscle. Is it hot or cold? It’s both and very intensely both.

Lopez is hard like a block of ice that is both hot and cold to the touch. She’s not the ice cubes you put in your gin and tonic. She’s hot, not cold. Her heat and passion is so extreme, it becomes its opposite – cold. My tai chi teacher explained that the sigmoid curve of the tai chi symbol represents that when a quality becomes extreme, it becomes its opposite.

Anthony’s Virgo is a mutable earth sign. Cancer is a cardinal water sign. Mutable earth is like the branches of a tree, swaying in the wind. They don’t break because they bend. Cancer is cardinal water, persistent but not forceful, like the dripping of a faucet. That persistent drip adds up to a lot of water if you put a bucket underneath. It’s a powerful drip, but you don’t notice its power because it’s the small adding up to the large.

Anthony is gentle but driven by the small details. He’s like a squirrel running around all day hiding nuts. Little by little he builds up his storehouse of food so he doesn’t have to worry (Virgo is a worrier) about winter.

Lopez is INTENSE about emotions and Anthony is intense about the little things in life. He says the picture frame is uneven she takes it off the wall, throws it at his head and says “I don’t care, show me you love me.”

Lopez is rightly a diva. Some are born this way; she is one.

Anthony was born with fine-tuned discrimination. He could be a piano tuner or scientist working with precision instruments. He could be a surgeon or cut pieces of sushi that are works of art.

Anthony’s confidence comes from his ability to do something so well that he can’t question himself. Lopez’s confidence comes from just being herself – no justification needed.

In societies that traditionally used astrology for matchmaking, they didn’t look for love. They looked for compatibility with the assumption the man would be the dominant force. In that way, these two are not necessarily compatible.

However, they do balance in qualities with Lopez focusing on larger-than-life and Anthony focusing on the details of life. Balance, however, is not always passion.

Richard Cordray, Mr. Persistent

President Obama is planning to nominate Richard Cordray, Ohio’s former Attorney General, to head a new financial protection bureau.

Cordray has a quiet but extensive history in Ohio politics having been a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, state solicitor, county treasurer, state treasurer and attorney general. I met him at a candidate fair in 1992 when he was running against Deborah Pryce for U.S. House of Representatives. He appears to have shot too high too early and backed off to gradually work his way up the political ladder.

Without looking at his chart, I’ve always felt he was persistent. He lost in 1992 but kept showing up on the ballot.

Cordray has sun in Taurus, a fixed earth sign which is known for grounded qualities such as persistence.

Cordray has both a grand earth and grand water trine (although widely aspected). He is both a practical and warmly emotional individual.

So what’s driving this man to politics?

Saturn is in the sign of Capricorn. Saturn rules Capricorn and enjoys being in its own sign. Saturn in Capricorn makes one a serious individual and highly ambitious driven to seek status. Because Saturn is where we feel some burden, limitation or insecurity, that Cordray is driven by his Saturn suggests his political ambitions stem from the need to prove himself through worldly success.

The earth trine in Cordray’s chart is between sun, Saturn and Pluto, all planets that rule dominion, authority and power.

The moon in Pisces, on the other hand, makes for a dreamy, imaginative individual. I suspect he once stared out windows and doodled in his notebook rather than paying attention to the teacher. Neptune opposite the sun adds to the effect of sometimes being in another, imaginative, world. Sometimes Cordray just isn’t “here.”

While Cordray’s chart is strong in earth and water, that Uranus in Leo squares his Taurus sun. I bet he sometimes takes unexpected risks, usually to prove himself in some way (Leo).

What does Cordray’s year look like?

Jupiter is transiting Taurus and will be right on top of Cordray’s natal sun by the fall. Jupiter “expands what it finds” as astrologer Jan Snodgrass says. For Cordray, it will expand financial security. He will feel good about his money and property and himself. Maybe like Ohio Governor John Kasich, who is also a Taurus, Cordray will spontaneously give away money.

Cordray may also make some wild financial speculations as Jupiter will be squaring that natal Uranus in Leo. That square also makes me wonder if Cordray will be starting his own business.

While the feeling of financial security is growing, Pluto is transiting Cordray’s natal Saturn. This is a very powerful aspect. It suggests intense power struggles. But the aspect is trine the natal sun/Pluto so Cordray will probably handle these struggles well.

The Pluto/Saturn conjunction will be like dealing with radioactive energy. The energy is intense, must be handled skillfully and can burn you into a black hole if you’re not careful.

While Cordray has a strong earth trine with powerful planets involved, he also has that Pisces moon and Mars in Cancer which make for a sensitive individual. Regardless of how well he externally handles this radioactive political environment, internally he will be affected.

Someone like Cordray has to watch his health at times like this. Sensitive people pick up on energies and if he has to hide those feelings, the feelings could manifest as illness. The illness would probably be a strange, difficult to diagnose illness.

If that wasn’t enough, transiting Neptune is in Pisces moving in the next ten years onto his natal moon. I suspect his time in national politics will be colored with this Neptunian energy.  Neptune is spiritual, emotional, creative and sacrificing.

Part of politics is Saturn – rules, laws. Part of politics is Pluto – power. And part of politics is Neptune – the zeitgeist.

Cordray will feel part of the times and the movements that occur while he’s in office. What he won’t like are any personal attacks that come as a result of his actions or decisions.

Cordray’s chart is a balanced chart. He has planets in all the elements and modes. He has two trines which offset the squares that exist. But he is more sensitive than he appears so he really should take care to protect himself from negative energy that emerges in politics.

Miranda July Wins “Honorary Pisces” Award

After seeing “Me, You and Everyone We Know,” I would have bet the farm that Miranda July, the writer, was a Pisces.

I was wrong.

It’s a good thing I don’t own a farm or know anyone that would make an astrological bet with me.

July is actually an Aquarius with moon in Sagittarius.

The movie is so filled with Pisces imagery that it still makes me wonder if it was deliberate. But as I write I realize that much of Pisces imagery is also Jesus imagery. Jesus was born (if you believe he existed) in the age of Pisces (if you believe in astrology).

What are those images?

  • Fish. The fish bowl on the car. Pisces is the sign of two fishes swimming in opposite directions.
  • Feet. The boyfriend was a shoe salesman. Pisces rules the feet.
  • Film. July’s character creates video art. Pisces is ruled by Neptune which rules motion pictures. Images have such power, I still marvel at it.
  • Me, you and everyone we know. That is all of humanity. Pisces is about merging rather than individuation.
  • Raw, unfiltered emotion. July’s character responds with honest, childlike emotion that feels the joy and pain of every living thing.

I can’t recall if the movie contained sacrifice, a big Piscean trait (and Jesus trait).

There are two marks of Pisces in July’s chart: Mercury in Pisces and Neptune conjunct the moon in Sagittarius. Neptune is the ruler of Pisces.

Mercury is about communication. July certainly communicates in a very Piscean way, emotional, undifferentiated and obtuse.

However, Saturn is in Gemini, the sign of communication, suggesting difficulty and insecurity in communicating. July probably thinks all night and day and I bet her thoughts won’t let her sleep. She’s on a high intellectual plane that is difficult to communicate to others.

The moon in Sagittarius is expansive, risk taking and unreliable. Neptune on the moon in Sagittarius adds what deceased astrologer Howard Sasportas called the “quest for the sublime.”

There are definitely some Piscean and Neptunian influences in July’s chart.

But stepping away from the watery Pisces and Neptune, the fog clears. July’s chart is mostly comprised of fire and air – intuition and intellect, enthusiasm and socialness. July’s chart isn’t near as watery as I would have guessed.

The sun and Jupiter are conjunct in Aquarius a fixed air sign. It is the sign of friendship, brotherhood and humanity. July does seem to have humanity in mind when creating art.

I see Aquarius as seeking the perfect universe, utopia. Aquarius is fixed and firm in its unusual ideas. Aquarius is also the rebel. Combined with Sagittarius we have a crusader – a headstrong, righteous crusader.

I now suspect that July’s diffuse, obtuse, undifferentiated emotion masks a true crusader with a very specific message. What message?

Since Pisces imagery is also Jesus imagery, I’m wondering if there is a hidden religious message in her work. While the moon in Sagittarius conjunct Neptune is openly messy about connecting the threads of its beliefs, Aquarius is actually very neat and tidy about its ideas.

I’m now wondering if July’s emotionally raw expression isn’t simply a tactic to challenge our culture rather than an expression of her personal emotions. Aquarius is actually hyper-rational, not emotional.

July is clearly a unique individual and probably has very, very clear ideas about every subject. I suspect if she explained her ideas, others would be confused because the strings that tie them together would be extensive and unusual. Both Aquarius and Sagittarius are unrestricted in thinking. This combination would not have the least conflict about carrying ideas contrary what others think.

That Saturn in Gemini suggests that she does want you to understand and really can’t understand why you don’t.

Mars and Venus in her chart are in earth signs, suggesting that no matter how absentminded she appears to be, she will know if you haven’t sent the paycheck. She can be grounded when the need arises.

I suspect July is trying to say something very specific and we’re just not getting it. I also suspect that if you were to disagree with her ideas, she would argue with you until the wee hours of the morning.

Kasich Promises $2 million for Research – a Jupiter Transit Story

Back at an American Federation of Astrologers convention in 1992, the astrologer Jan Snodgrass said in a lecture that Jupiter, when transiting, “expands what it finds.”

Some think of Jupiter as being solely benevolent. This astrologer clarified that it expands whatever it finds. If it finds charity, it expands charity. If it finds gambling, it expands gambling. She debunked the myth that Jupiter is solely “good.”

John Kasich, governor of Ohio, has Jupiter transiting his natal Jupiter in Taurus. By spring of next year, it will be transiting his natal Taurus sun.

I don’t know Kasich’s time of birth so can’t tell what area of his life this Jupiter normally affects. Astrologically, Taurus is money and property so it’s no wonder that the expansive Jupiter moved Kasich to spontaneously offer Children’s Hospital $2 million for research.

Looking at Kasich’s chart from a personal standpoint, I would guess his generosity springs from his own feeling of financial security. He feels good about his money, so now he will offer you some. If Kasich did not feel financially secure himself, he probably would not have made that offer.

Money represents our values. How we spend our money reflects what is important to us.

While Kasich is offering up money from nowhere for research into children’s health, on the other side of the financial coin he is taxing teachers to take salary cuts and pay more for their own health care.

In the Columbus Dispatch story, Kasich said that pediatric research was “a priority.” Pediatric education, it seems, is not. Kasich is telling us his priorities by telling us how he wants to spend his money.

It makes me wonder if Kasich has a sick child in his life.

Jupiter has expanded Kasich’s method of showing his feelings by offering money. He probably does this in his personal life as well. You will know he’s happy because he has offered to buy dinner. Buying dinner is something a Kasich’s Capricorn moon doesn’t do often.

The news here is that Jupiter is transiting Kasich’s natal Jupiter in Taurus. Kasich is happy and offering us presents. This is the old “dad’s in a good mood, let’s go ask him to buy us pizza for dinner” moment.

Seize the moment.

And look under the couch cushions for loose change.

The Most Stubborn Sign of the Zodiac is . . .

. . . definitely in the eye of the beholder.

It’s a habit of mine to think of Taurus as the most stubborn sign of the zodiac as it is the fixed earth sign. However, on the way to the gym today, I began thinking that maybe another fixed sign, Aquarius, is the most stubborn.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of stubborn is:

“Unreasonably obstinate, obstinately perverse, fixed or set in purpose or opinion, resolute.”

Notice the word “fixed.” In astrology there are four elements and three modes. Four times three makes the twelve signs. The modes are cardinal, mutable and fixed.

The four fixed signs are: Taurus (earth), Leo (fire), Scorpio (water) and Aquarius (air).

Fixed is, as the definition of stubborn suggests, set in purpose. It’s no wonder many world leaders and most American presidents have been born under a fixed sun sign. One needs set purpose to manage the crossfire of life in politics.

All of the fixed signs may at times appear stubborn in their energetic sphere. I think I understand why Aquarius seems to me even more stubborn than Taurus.

Taurus is an earth sign, practical and realistic. Taurus is an even-keeled sign only showing temper when pressed too hard from the outside.

I see Taurus as stubborn with regard to habit. Do not try to make a Taurus go faster or in a different direction. While you can’t make a Taurus change direction rapidly, the Taurus also won’t ask you to change directions either. Taurus may be stubborn with itself, but it won’t be stubborn toward you.

Aquarius is an air sign, intellectual and idealistic. Aquarius, to me, has a vision of “the perfect universe.” I think Aquarius appears to me most stubborn because it wants the ideal of the world to be followed by others. Taurus just does its own thing; Aquarius wants you to do its thing.

What about the other two fixed signs?

Leo to me is more forceful than stubborn. It is fixed fire, enthusiastic and intuitive. Maybe Leo doesn’t appear stubborn because the shining light of its personality is able to energize you enough to follow its lead.

Leo, like Aquarius, is extraverted so it does want others to share the fun. However, Leo is fire whereas Aquarius is air. Convincing others of an intellectual idea (Aquarius) such as buying rice in bulk to save the planet is much more difficult than convincing others of a fun idea (Leo) such as calling in sick and going to the zoo.

Scorpio is the fixed water sign, intense and emotional. This is the one water sign that hides its vulnerability. Cancer and Pisces are more open to their own fragility.

Scorpio is often viewed as controlling. The stubborn in Scorpio is emotional stubbornness. If you hurt me, I will never forget. Scorpio doesn’t always see that others are not conscious of their motives and hurt out of humanness, not maliciousness.

Scorpio is stubborn with regard to how it feels. And because how it feels is everything to a Scorpio, this sign is known to “bite its own tail” or poison itself. Like Taurus, the stubbornness often goes inward, not outward.

My vote for most stubborn, at this moment, is Aquarius.

What is your vote?

South Sudan: The Birth of a Nation

South Sudan came into the world on July 9, 2011 at 12:01 am. Studying the charts of nations is a branch of astrology called “mundane astrology.”

I found this website from Skyscript to brush up on mundane astrology.

South Sudan is a Cancer sun, Libra moon and Aries rising. The sun is person in authority, the moon is the population as a whole and the rising sign is the condition of the country.

The sun in Cancer means the ruler will be seen as a father or mother to the people. The moon in Libra indicates the people are friendly and seek fun and companionship. The Aries rising indicates the state of the country is aggressive and warlike.

This combination of Cancer –Libra-Aries is a T-square. Pluto in Capricorn and Saturn in Libra adds to the cardinal cross. South Sudan may find it difficult to get back to family life under these aspects.

First, I suspect it will be difficult for South Sudan to get along with others. If South Sudan were a person, I would say this person is trying to balance the cardinal grand cross of me/you, family/career. What am I? How do I define myself?

We have many roles in our personal lives but often identify with one or two at most – I’m a career woman and loving mother. But how about career woman, loving mother, devoted wife and crusader for a cause? That’s difficult.

South Sudan’s sun is in the 3rd house, the house of communications and neighbors. This country may find its role as a transmitter of communications for others. Because the sun is in Cancer, I’m imagining it becoming a place of refugees re-uniting or a place where other family/clan communication can occur.

Cancer is milk to me, so I wonder if they will export dairy products. I don’t think South Sudan has cows, but maybe they have some other food product that will feed neighbors.

South Sudan’s moon is in the 7th house, the house of partnerships and foreign relations. I’m getting a stronger image of this country playing the role of mediator or refugee harbor for other countries. Those countries may not like this (Pluto in Capricorn squaring sun and moon).

Jupiter is in the first house in Taurus suggested the state may be ruled as a religious state. It will occur because the religious leaders are the ones with money and property (Taurus).

Uranus will transit the Aries rising in the spring of 2016. This country will probably go through another revolution of some sort at that time. A few years after that transit, Uranus will conjunct the Jupiter in Taurus challenging the religious and/or property owners who rule the country.

Saturn is in the 6th house, house of health and work. Work is not abundant and the work people do may be bad for their health.

Pluto in the 9th house and Mars in the 2nd in Gemini suggest earnings from communication and foreign investment. I keep getting the sense of this country being an intermediary for some sort of world commerce.

Good luck to South Sudan. A new project scares me; I can’t imagine starting a new country. Especially in this economy.

Adolf Hitler’s Chart

When people are introduced to a new concept, they often think of an extreme situation to measure against it. For example, someone might say to you “If you visualize what you want, you’ll get it.” And you think, “Ok, what if I visualize being the Queen of England?”

This happens with astrology. “If astrology is so true, could you have figured out Hitler?”

I’ve watched astrologers over the last 25 years look at Hitler’s chart and try to explain it. I laugh. Especially when they get to the peace-loving Libra rising that most believe is the accurate chart. I don’t believe they or I could have picked this chart out and said, “This is the man that led a nation to commit genocide.”

What’s worse, Hitler has the same planets and signs in his chart that you and I have. We all share the same cosmic dust.

To look at Hitler’s chart, I think we need to put his life in perspective. He’s blamed for the deaths of millions, but to my knowledge he killed no one but himself. He definitely manipulated, encouraged and facilitated the murder of others with willing assassins, which is something else.

So could an astrologer see this in Hitler’s chart?

What I believe I would have seen without knowing the person behind the chart is that this person lacked the ability to feel. There is no water in the chart.

The Taurus sun and Capricorn moon are both earth signs. Capricorn is the sign of the moon’s detriment, meaning the moon can’t do what the moon does (feel) in Capricorn. Capricorn is about restraint, the opposite of feeling which flows without reason.

Nature needs Capricorn moons just like any other moon. Who could keep calm in an 80-story building hit by planes but someone who could control his/her emotions? Who could lead soldiers into battle? Or clean the wound of a loved one who is dying?

There are lots of life situations where emotional control is needed and Capricorn moons step up to the plate.

Where emotional control is not needed is in the midst of murder. Capricorn is practical, systematic and organized. I still feel anguish when I think about how Jews were not only murdered, but their possessions and even their gold fillings were removed, documented and stored. That’s Capricorn moon gone to the dark side. That’s when some feelings help you realize the reality of the situation. It’s ironic that feelings would have given the “reality” check of genocide when feelings are normally associated with subjective states.

I believe I and other astrologers could have seen someone who could be dictatorial in his daily life. However, if you’ve ever worked in corporate life, you know this is not an uncommon trait. I don’t know why we see dictators as unusual when really there are lots of people would rule an island nation if they could.

How did this particular man, Adolf Hitler, become the figurehead for such terror?

I don’t believe that is in the realm of personal astrology. I believe this is mass psychology finding the right bad individual at the right time. Hitler and the Jews were both a projection of a terrible energy.

I remember one astrologer, maybe Liz Greene, pointing out that Hitler’s Pluto and Neptune are conjunct in Gemini in the 8th house. That conjunction could have made Hitler a perfect figurehead for a mass psychosis.

I can agree with that, but Hitler is one of many with this conjunction in his chart. That kind of conjunction affects entire generations. It still doesn’t answer, “Why him?”

My answer would be if it weren’t the man called Adolf Hitler, it might have been another man with the steadfastness to believe in something horrible and the wherewithal to implement a plan of action. And if Hitler hadn’t been the man to lead this movement, he would still have had to find another outlet for his narrow and rigid beliefs, probably those closest to him.

Colombian Rock Stars Shakira and Juanes

Shakira and Juanes are not only the two biggest rock stars of Colombia, they are famous throughout the the world.

For achieving such fame, their charts couldn’t be more different. Juanes was born with a rock-star personality. Shakira was not.

Juanes has sun, moon, Mars and Mercury in Leo, the fixed fire sign that is about self-expression, romance and children. Mainly, Leo is about Leo, a dramatic attention seeker. With so many planets in Leo, Juanes has probably been seeking and getting attention all his life. While his energy may be delightful to his fans, I’m guessing that spending every day with him could be a little tiring. It’s good he has millions of fans to pay him attention because it is not possible for a few beings to give him the attention he needs.

Shakira has sun in Aquarius and moon in Cancer. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, the rebel and humanitarian. The moon is in a cardinal water sign, family oriented, extremely sensitive and shy. While Shakira may delight in rebellious or unique behavior, she won’t push the envelope too far because the reaction would upset her. She’s someone who might start and argument for fun, push a little, then back down if the opposition came on too strong. She’s like a teenager – I want to rebel, but I also want your love, and can you drive me to the mall?

Shakira’s chart, in general, is more complex than Juanes’. She has a grand cross of Mars/Mercury in Capricorn, Pluto in Libra and moon in Cancer. Her conflicts are between the need for family, the drive for career and the urge for a partner. Which is it? Can she have them all?

In theory you can have them all, be a rock star, wife, mother and lover. In reality, the roles are difficult to balance and Shakira wants to balance them all. Because of that urge, she can be very demanding of others around her. When she plays mother, you’d better cooperate. Now I’m the business woman, so follow suit.

Shakira’s Saturn is in Leo, the sign where Juanes lives. Shakira is not entirely comfortable being the center of attention. I wonder what drove her to the stage? Saturn represents father, society and rules. Shakira seems to have felt she “must” be famous or a performer.

Juanes, on the other hand, is a performer, all day and night. In addition to all the planets in Leo, he has all other planets in fire or air except for Venus in Cancer. For him, his partner is his family and everyone else is a friend. Air and fire are social and extroverted.

There’s no earth in Juanes’ chart which represents lack of grounding. He’s a rolling stone that gathers no moss. He’s definitely not out back watering a garden right now. Or building a bookcase. Or carving figures out of wood. He’s most likely talking on the phone, or talking to friends, or . . . talking. Or singing I suppose.

Juanes Saturn is in Gemini, the sign of the twins which represents communication. For all his talking, Juanes may actually have trouble communicating with others. He can talk, but communication is a back and forth. I have noticed in Juanes music a lot of complaining about “mentira, mentira, mentira” (lying, lying, lying). I suspect that is a projection, as Leo is known to exaggerate. I think Juanes is not focused on other’s perspectives. He may also have trouble differentiating between his wild ideas and reality. Because you wanted to punch the guy in the nose is different from actually doing it.

For Leos, life is a movie or telenovela (soap opera). Soap operas are a repetition of love, hate, denial, betrayal and amnesia in simplistic exaggeration. Leos eat it up. Leo is loving open and fully engaged in life, both the ups and downs.

While both Shakira and Juanes are playing the role of mega rock star, for Juanes it is a good fit, for Shakira, not so much. Both have expanded their lives to include various causes. Shakira may one day part from the world of rock to those causes. Juanes probably will not.

What’s Tom Cruise been up to?

It occurred to me today that we haven’t heard much from Tom Cruise. Like any man, he’s probably busy with family, raising children and cooking dinner. He is a sun sign Cancer so would enjoy simply being the dad.

According to Astrotheme’s chart, Cruise has moon in Leo. This is the actor part of him, the emotional need for adoring fans that gets him out of his Cancer shell that protects his sensitive skin.

Uranus has just entered Aries, Neptune has just entered Pisces and Pluto has just entered Capricorn. The sign changes for the outer planets suggests an entirely new energetic pattern for all of us. This is confirmed, to me, by local psychics and energy workers. Our personalities are shifting due to external energy patters upon us.

For Cruise, these three sign changes mean great transformations. I suspect the quiet is not just about family time.

Uranus moving into Aries moves into Cruise’s 7th house of partnerships. Some freedom in partnerships is occurring. It will probably be “the other” who wants freedom. Uranus will square sun in Cancer saying the conflict is “me or family.”

Uranus trines the moon in Leo suggesting that “me” will win.

Neptune in Pisces moves into Cruise’s 6th house, the house of work and health. Pisces rules the feet so Cruise may be having trouble with the feet. But Pisces is so much more than feet. It is the entire ethereal self. So I would guess spiritual illness which may manifest in strange physical symptoms.

Pluto is in Capricorn. Capricorn is opposite Cancer. The full opposition won’t occur for a year to a year and a half. This represents power struggles with others, possibly authority. This is a serious power struggle, not one about the neighbors leaves falling into your backyard. It is about control.

Cruise is clearly busy with something. Mars is in Gemini for about a month right now, conjuncting  Cruise’s natal Mercury in Gemini. At the beginning of July, around his birthday and a couple weeks after, we may hear something from him.

Jupiter transiting Taurus is still in his 8th house, but will touch his natal Mars in Taurus in about a year. His natal Mars is in the 9th house of philosophy and higher education. In Taurus suggests he will devote money to a new cause or buy property abroad. His attitude toward money will be more expansive.

Jupiter will oppose Neptune in Scorpio in the 2nd house. Cruise may be giving money to people right now who have emotional or spiritual ties to him. I’m suspecting that he will change the recipients of his money.

One more word about Pluto. It’s trining Cruise’s natal Pluto in Virgo in the 12th. That’s a nice aspect. It helps with this transformation of power and control. In the 12th things are hidden. In Virgo I simply wonder if it’s some obsessive-compulsive disorder type of thing. Some weird habit or habits that controls his life but is secret.

It was a whim that made me look at Cruise’s chart. I had no idea he had so much going on.

The Big Astrology Theory

I’ve been watching way too much Big Bang Theory. I’m catching up on the three seasons I missed and overdosing to where I feel nauseated. Notice I didn’t say nauseous. I learned from Sheldon, a character on the show, that what I really mean is nauseated.

The Big Bang Theory centers on four brainy college professors (three with PhDs, one just an engineer) who spend their work time thinking about physics and their free time thinking about science fiction movies, role playing games and comic books. They are intellectually brilliant and socially awkward.

The counterbalance is Penny who lives across the hall, works at the Cheesecake Factory and wants to be an actress.

This blog is to explore the astrological archetypes of the characters. The character Sheldon would hate it, as he believes astrology is proven non-science. But it’s ironic I would spend time analyzing television characters to figure out their astrological signs; it’s actually something the Big Bang Theory characters would do.

Sheldon

Let’s start with Sheldon, who seems to have the most lines in the show and is a finely-tuned character. He is a theoretical physicist with an IQ of 178 or something. He’s an intellectual genius, graduating from college at 14, and obsessive compulsive to the point where he’s almost autistic. He knows facts about everything, from the ancient meaning of words to Bollywood film actresses. He disdains human contact altogether without any sense of embarrassment.

Once in the show Sheldon mocks Penny for believing in astrology. Her response is, “That’s because you’re a Taurus.” Taurus is a good start for Sheldon as he is filled with habit. He has his spot on the couch, eats the same food every night in the week (such as Thursday being pizza night) and does his laundry on Saturdays precisely at 8:15 p.m. And those are just a few of his habits. When he’s thrown off a habit, such as his 8:20 a.m. bowel movement, he’s anxious.

I like the fixed aspect of Taurus, but one quality doesn’t work for me. Taurus is an earth sign so Sheldon should like some human contact. I’m switching him to a fixed sign that isn’t so fond of human touch -Aquarius.

Aquarius is fixed, like Taurus. I personally find Aquarius even more stubborn than Taurus. Aquarius has habits, but weird habits. If the earth shifted, the habits of Aquarius wouldn’t. That’s Sheldon. And Aquarius is scientific with a dislike for intimate emotional contact. Aquarius is the sign of progressive ideas of revolution.

The irony of Sheldon’s and the pure Aquarian personality is that they work for humankind but don’t necessary want to sit next to humankind. Sheldon is close to figuring out the very genesis of the universe but can’t figure out his roommate is angry because he can’t read facial expressions. And, Sheldon will tell you, he’s not interested anyway.

Leonard

Sheldon’s roommate is Leonard. Leonard is also very smart, but seeks human contact. His love for Penny is the major theme of the first three seasons. We learn his family pressured him to achieve and his mother is much like Sheldon, devoid of human feelings. To get the maternal care he needed as a child, Leonard used his science know-how to build a hugging machine (which his father also used).

Leonard is also lactose-intolerant. Lactose is in milk, milk represents mothering, which he didn’t receive. Regardless, Leonard is open about his need for love and is willing to take some risks.

For me, Leonard is a Cancer. Cancer is the sign of mothering, which he openly needs. He is shy, but is willing to open himself up to others. He also takes care of Sheldon in a nurturing way, putting up with his habits and mediating when the other characters have conflicts. He’ll make a good father one day; hopefully they will build that into the show.

Howard and Raj

Howard and Raj, two friends, aren’t so well-defined. Howard is the Jewish boy who lives with his mother (who we never see but often hear). Raj is Indian, so shy around women that he can’t speak. During episode one he’s offered a drink which is the magic potion to talk to women.

Howard is defined most by his ostentatious ego and wildly colored clothes. We are often reminded in the show that he’s “just an engineer.” He has a Masters in Engineering from MIT and designs things for space missions, but the others constantly insult him for not having a PhD. But he maintains pride about his engineering feats, like building a zero-gravity toilet.

Of the four characters, Howard is most willing to go out and try to pick up girls. He thinks he’s hot, the girls do not. He also bounces back from rejection, as when Penny tells him he’s a loser. I brand Howard a Leo.

Leo loves attention. I propose Howard lives with his mother because he needs a doting female. He also brags about working with space missions and offers to let women drive the land rover on Mars in an effort to pick them up. Very Leo.

Raj is the most difficult to assign a sign. He’s shy and sweet, somewhat like Leonard. He discovered drinking to help him talk with woman which adds to the thought that he’s a water sign (like Leonard). The signs I think of as “sweet” are: Cancer, Virgo (when it’s not complaining), Libra and Pisces.

Since Raj now drinks, I’ll assign him Pisces, a water sign. It’s the most sensitive of the signs. Raj hasn’t exhibited the Pisces secretiveness, but he does whisper what he wants to say to Howard so Howard can tell the group.

Penny

That leaves Penny, also a more loosely-designed character. She’s everything the boys are not: chaotic, spontaneous, social, female, disorganized and somehow paying for the same apartment that Sheldon/Leonard share with combined professor incomes.

I’ll brand Penny a Gemini. Gemini is an air sign. It’s social, curious and constantly moving. Gemini would befriend four people that it had nothing in common with. Penny seems to have befriended the boys because they are different and interesting. She has no ulterior motive. Even though she’s like a dog in a group of cats, she hangs out like she’s one of them.

I’m glad my friend suggested I watch the show. I wonder why she made that suggestion?
