Amy Sheen and Charlie Winehouse

Amy Winehouse, like Charlie Sheen, has sun in Virgo and moon in Sagittarius. When I first looked at her chart I thought, “The Charlie Sheen Sagittarius moon. That’s why she can’t control herself.”

Sagittarius is not known for self-restraint. That is in the realm of Capricorn. But then I realized that I can’t think of a single Sagittarius sun that is in the news right now making a mess of his/her life. So Sagittarius is not to blame.

It’s the Virgo that’s to blame. Virgo is critical of self and others, so additional external criticism is probably not a nice thing for me to do.

Virgo is the workaholic perfectionist. Virgo is a mutable earth sign, practical yet more flexible than earth-sign sisters Capricorn and Taurus. Virgo is nervous and shy.

Sagittarius, while it might get on its high horse and tell you how to live your life, generally leaves you alone because he/she may be indulging in the very thing they are campaigning against. Think William Bennett who wrote books about morals and was found to be gambling bucket loads of money in Vegas.

Like Sheen, I’m suggesting Winehouse’s problem isn’t indulgence, but perfection. In an effort to be “perfect,” how can we not fail? So if we’re going to fail, why not do it right and have some sense of satisfaction?

Behind substance abuse is some problem. I don’t know what childhood demons plague Winehouse and Sheen. But I wonder if it’s a simply problem of balance – have some fun and don’t feel guilty. If you feel guilty, you will offset that feeling with more indulgence. While each is indulging, I’m guessing there is a strong voice saying “Bad boy/girl!” They both profess to like that voice, but I don’t buy it.

Both need to figure out how to have fun in a balanced, temperate manner. I’m embarrassed for Virgos when they try to shock with nasty, worldly behavior. Really, it’s a more innocent sign. I believe Virgo is associated with servitude and work because to be a good servant or worker, you can’t have a super huge ego. You serve others best when you think they are better than you are in some way. That’s Virgo. Aiming for perfection and seeing the gap then erroneously thinking that everyone else has figured it out.

That’s when the gentle sign of Virgo is most violent and beats itself up for these flaws. It’s nice, I suppose, to keep the violence to themselves. Although if the news stories are to be believed, Sheen is sending his inner violence outward.

Winehouse has many more planets in Sagittarius (Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Moon) than does Sheen (just moon). Sheen has more pressure on the Virgo energy with Uranus and Pluto in Virgo. The Virgo-Sagittarius energy (which is in square aspect) is still strong in both charts. I would say Winehouse nags herself with criticism and Sheen probably turns criticism into a knife that he stabs in his heart.

Sheen has two planets in water (Mars and Neptune in Scorpio) and Winehouse has only Saturn in Scorpio. Winehouse is actually farther away than Sheen from having an emotional understanding of what’s she’s doing.

I think both Winehouse and Sheen could help themselves if they just owned up to being innocent and having the insecurity that comes with innocence. But that doesn’t sell well.

John Edwards Who Are You?

Back in 2004 when John Edwards was the VP running mate with John Kerry, I didn’t think either man stood a chance. And, avid reader, you probably know why – too much Gemini for the American Presidency.

Kerry is a Sagittarius sun and Gemini moon and Edwards is a Gemini sun AND Gemini moon. That’s a triple dose of Gemini – way too much Gemini for the American public. Americans love fixed signs (Aquarius, Taurus, Leo and Scorpio), people who have singular focus and unwavering determination. Gemini is a mutable air sign – the most flexible, dexterous and changeable of the signs.

I also suspected in 2004 that Edwards with four planets in Gemini (moon, Jupiter, sun and Mars) was not the simple hard-working-good-boy from South Carolina. You can fool some people, John, but not your astrologer. Gemini is way, way too curious for such simplicity. You need to be a double Taurus (sun & moon in Taurus) to convince me of something like that.

Gemini is the sign of the twins. It’s a funny sign, the twins. It wants to find its mate, but doesn’t want clinging, emotional commitment. Gemini comes in the front door but is well aware of all the exit signs and may pass through one as you turn your head.

A Gemini friend once told me that she looked in the mirror each morning and wondered who was there. I suspect Edwards, with so much Gemini and two planets in other-oriented Libra does the same.

Gemini gone bad is known for duplicity, the quintessential con artist. I think Gemini can accomplish this duplicity both because of an agile, active mind and also because it can control the emotions that come with telling a lie.

So why does he want to portray himself as this grounded, simple guy? From his chart, I can’t fathom a guess. His Venus is in Taurus, the only planet in an earth sign, so he found his grounding from his love partner. I see no indication that someone forced him to be practical in life.

Using Astrotheme’s time of birth, Edwards’ 9th house has Aquarius on the cusp. I look to the 9th house as an indication of the religious/spiritual/philosophical upbringing one had. Edwards also has Uranus in Cancer. Combined it suggests he actually had an unusual, progressive and unconventional upbringing. I can’t imagine anyone saying to him, “John, just get a 9-to-5 job and be happy.” They probably said, “Do whatever you want. We don’t care.”

I feel confused by this chart but wonder if Edwards is portraying some type of image that he sees around him rather than one he truly feels. If I saw this chart without knowing to whom it belonged, I would image an extremely free-spirited person, someone who loved to be in love, but didn’t really care for any kind of attachment that involved duty. I would have guessed an extreme social butterfly, a hippie, a wanderer. My image is of someone who has a house or apartment but is rarely there, has no food and no plants and just shows up once in a while between adventures.

The abundance of air in the chart attests to his intellectual abilities. I still have trouble understanding how he maintained the focus to become a presidential candidate.

I look at Edwards chart and see the elements, but I can’t figure out what life means to him. I can only guess that for him, life should be fun. His chart feels like a thought traveling through space and time, a leaf floating through the air on a windy day, a leaf you can’t catch as it bobs up and down.

The Sex-Text-iest Man Alive

Democrat Anthony Weiner US House Rep from New York is currently embroiled in a “scandal” where he confessed to sending sexual images on Twitter. Bad boy.

I can imagine, like, millions of others doing this. I’m also trying to understand if a law, and what law, was broken.

So what made this man sex-text?

Weiner is a Virgo sun but has moon in Leo square Jupiter in Taurus. Jupiter is transiting Taurus right now igniting the square. Based on this Leo-Taurus square aspect, I will guess he did it for two reasons:

  1. He’s sensual and he liked it.
  2. He was desperately trying to attract someone.

Leo is romantic and Taurus is sensual. Virgo, on the other hand, is a worrying sign that knows how to love you, but worries at the same time about that sniffle and whether it’s a contagious cold. Also, some sex acts are downright dirty, really.

Outside of that Leo moon, Weiner is really Mr. America, a simply guy who loves to keep his desk organized and plan the Thanksgiving dinner, down to the spices in the cranberry sauce. Weiner has lots of earth and water in his chart. He’s both practical and fun-loving.

The one element lacking in Weiner’s chart is air. He lacks some social skills and social awareness. He’s great one-on-one but has a more difficult time in large groups.

The family-man and Felix Unger, portion of Weiner’s personality is in contrast to that fluff-your-feathers, strut-your-stuff Leo moon. Those are two competing aspects of his personality. That his texting became a scandal also means that he touched something sensitive in American culture.

The French are probably yawning right now, talking about how the Puritan Americans are worrying once again about the rather banal sex lives of their politicians. And no maid, even, was assaulted.

I wonder what would happen if Weiner did this: tell the American people he sex-texted because it was fun and it turned him on. Remind the public that this is secular state and not a Puritan state. Then say proudly he will sex-text again when the mood strikes him, or maybe even have phone sex.

Hopefully Weiner won’t let the public hang him by his testicles. Then his sex life will really go down the tubes. Maybe he should just promise to keep his private parts private.

Five Career Options for Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich is clearly not reading this blog. If he was, he would know that Americans don’t like mutable signs in the presidency. Americans especially do not care for Geminis.

There have been only two Gemini presidents: John F. Kennedy and George Bush Sr. Enough said.

Gingrich is a Gemini sun (mutable air) and Sagittarius moon (mutable fire). That Gingrich did the unexpected (Gemini) and went ‘a traveling (Sagittarius) without letting people know (male) is not unusual with a chart full of mutable signs. In the Myers-Briggs Personality Assessment, Gingrich would be a perceiver.

Mutability means flexibility, adaptability and changeableness. The co-worker who sits next to you, arrives at the same time every day, eats the same sandwich for lunch and goes to bed at the same time every night is not a mutable sun sign.

My advice to Newt Gingrich – don’t run for president of the United States. Italy, yes. France, possibly. But not the United States.

Looking his chart, I came up with five professions based on his personality to keep the 63-year old Gingrich occupied through the “remains of his days.”

  1. Traveling salesman – Gemini likes to talk and Sagittarius likes to travel.
  2. Foreign ambassador – Same as above with the added benefit of meeting foreign people. Foreignness is interesting to the Sagittarian type. If he wants to be in politics, this is the best place.
  3. Owner of an athletic team – Gingrich’s Mars is in Aries giving him interest in sports. Owning a sports team also provides opportunity for travel.
  4. Casino magnate – This plays into Gingrich’s Sagittarius moon. Mixing with a seamy crowd and avoiding the law are both exiting. Love of risk is Sagittarian.
  5. Horse tycoon – This mixes Sagittarian love of sports, gambling and animals. Travel is involved and talking to a lot of people.

What I don’t understand about the Gingrichs and Trumps and other filthy-rich people in retirement age is why they want to work at all. That’s just some working-class angst.

Newt, go travel and have fun. Leave the presidency to the type of person who eats the same sandwich every day. In this case, the sandwich of responsibility.

Osama bin Laden – Average Student of Genocide

This month’s Vanity Fair has a cartoon of a cafeteria line in hell with Osama Bin Laden standing between Mao Ze Dong and Adolf Hitler. On Hitler’s left is Joseph Stalin.

On seeing this picture, my left brain clicked into gear and starting calculating the number of people killed through policies and pogroms of Mao, Hitler and Stalin versus the terrorism of Osama bin Laden.

According to this site on 20th century genocides, in terms of total number of casualties, Mao is top dog. Silver and bronze medal runners up are Stalin and Hitler. As a percent of total population under each man’s control, I suspect Hitler might pass Stalin. Hitler might even pass Mao, but I don’t have the information to do the math.

Where is Osama bin Laden? Way down at the bottom of the list with only 3,500 casualties directly attributed to his evil deeds. He’s definitely not Dancing with the Genociders. He’s not a Genocide Idol. Maybe he wants to be in hell with Mao, Hitler and Stalin but is really in hell with lesser Men of Evil. bin Laden is just average.

The sun signs of the top genocide dogs are:

Mao                                       Capricorn

Hitler                                     Taurus

Stalin                                     Sagittarius [correction]

Capricorn and Taurus are both earth signs. In a very crude way, earth signs are practical, able to ground ideas in reality. Unfortunately, with Mao & Hitler the ideas were evil ones. I thought Stalin was a Capricorn but it appears he changed his own birthdate to be near Capricorn. He was born in earlier December as a Sagittarius.

Some other current or recently-passed earth sign dictators are:

Pol Pot                                Taurus

Saddam Hussein               Taurus

Hosni Mubarak                 Taurus

Bashar al Assad                 Virgo

Zine El Abidine Ban Ali    Virgo

What’s Osama bin Laden? He’s a Pisces. Pisces is a mutable water sign. It’s said about terrorism that the number of people killed may be few, but the drama of the killings sends fear through many. Terrorism isn’t about the actual number of people killed, but the uniqueness of the killing, the message of the killing.

Bin Laden spread mostly fear, not death, and initiated a negative image of his people to other parts of the world. While bin Laden did plan deadly attacks, his ability to create plans of mass destruction pale in comparison to his cafeteria-line mates in hell. Maybe it’s because Mao, Hitler and Stalin stuck to killing their own people in their own hunting grounds and bin Laden planned his attacks in far-away places.

The moral of the story is that earth signs make things happen. While bin Laden was the mastermind of a few attacks and killings, his image was great in proportion to his actual level of damage. But he did accomplish something Piscean – he convinced people to sacrifice themselves (very, very Piscean) for a cause, kill others for a cause and created anxiety amongst people all over the world.

In summary, bin Laden was able to spread a (negative) feeling throughout the world. bin Laden transformed Piscean spiritual feelings into killing instincts. bin Laden created a cloud of anxiety and sent it into a jet stream to drop toxic rain all over the globe.

The American press purported surprise that bin Laden lived modestly. (If he’d lived like a king, they would have criticized that too). It makes sense –his goal was spiritual, not material. He had only a TV set, a device that transfers images. Neptune, ruler of Pisces, rules film. Film is image. Image is powerful.

Mao and Hitler were earth signs and included material gain in their efforts (food, land, property). Hitler’s devoted killers even took the gold fillings from people’s teeth after killing them. It’s awful to think about.

In terms of actual numbers, bin Laden is a nothing of history. In terms of emotional impact, he may very well have earned his place in hell with the genociders.

Stephen Colbert Has Multiple Personalities

I’m glad Stephen Colbert created a show to manifest one of his many personalities. Colbert is a Taurus sun with Gemini moon. It’s the Gemini that has the multifaceted personality. Taurus, not so much.

The Gemini moon is actually the lone wolf in Colbert’s chart. Gemini is an air sign. All of his other planets are in earth and water.  Hmm, interesting. The Colbert that leaves the show and goes to hibernate at home is probably very unlike the one we see on TV.

So let’s pretend the Gemini moon wasn’t there. Sun, Jupiter, Mars and Mercury in Taurus is an earthy, practical person. This describes a methodical person who persistently and patiently meets life challenges. And if life doesn’t present challenges, Taurus does not go looking.

Taurus is also very stubborn and prefers life to be simple. If things get complicated, Taurus puts up the stubborn resistance to that complexity. I believe that is what makes people see things in “black and white.” It’s clearer. All categorization, like astrology, is a way to make the chaotic world manageable.

Pluto and Uranus in Virgo represent the “Green” generation who is trying to live on the planet in a cleaner, healthier manner. Virgo trines Taurus meaning the collective movements is in line with Colbert’s Taurus nature. He doesn’t waste. Taurus is a builder and preserver.

Venus in Cancer says that Colbert values time with family. People are only brought into the home if they feel like family in some way. Cancer is selective about friendship. Any friend that hurt one’s feelings is not a friend for long.

Saturn in Pisces is a melancholy placement that makes people yearn for spiritual connection. Pisces is a sensitive sign prone to self-pity. Like its opposite sign Virgo, Pisces is a worrier. Virgo worries about details (will the napkins arrive on time for the event?), health (I ate a fig and feel funny. Should I go to the emergency room?) and work (I’ll never get this done on time). Pisces, on the other hand, worries in an emotional way that can be called “irrational fears” (I hope this building doesn’t get bombed while I’m in it).

Up to now, the signs in Colbert’s chart work together to create an introverted, honest, down-to-earth, hard-working personality.

Now for the Gemini. Gemini is air. It is extroverted, social, curious, inquisitive, fun-loving and light. Gemini is the person you talk to for hours at the party, the one who tells funny stories and anecdotes.  And when you turn to say hello to the person next to you, Gemini is gone, off to a new person.

Gemini is the sign of the twins and is often seen to have two or more personalities. The Gemini who yesterday sympathized with your pain today tells you to “suck it up.”

I don’t think Colbert has multiple personalities because of the Gemini moon. I think he has multiple personalities because the Gemini moon is so different from the rest of his chart. If his chart were full of air and fire signs, it would make sense that he’d be someone that sometimes disappears. But because he’s normally so steady and solid, the changeableness of Gemini probably is surprising.

Colbert’s TV personality reflects the Gemini quick-wittedness and fast speech. Colbert seems to have found a creative way to express his moon that, hopefully, keeps the rest of his life in balance. If he didn’t have this outlet, I could see him being someone who did the “9-to-5” routine but fantasized about a more wild, unusual existence.

Because he has all those planets in Taurus, if Colbert did make a crazy leap into uncharted waters, he would probably regret it later.

Colbert has found an interesting and clever way to be a Gemini. I’m guessing at home that he’s a Taurus.

Things Were Better When I Was a Kid

“Things were better when I was a kid.” We’ve all heard this. When I was in my 20’s a friend, also in her 20’s, commented that they didn’t make good rock music anymore (like they did in the 1960s). I was shocked that someone my age (at the time) would say something I’d only then heard from the elderly.

The feeling that the present is worse than the past seems more than a bad attitude. It seems, almost, like an illness that can strike any of us.

And the past has seemed better to those in the past. A June 2011 Smithsonian article describes the 14th century Japanese writer Kenko. The article says that a translator of Kenko’s work named Donald Keene said “there flows through the essays ‘the conviction that the world is steadily growing worse.’”

And that was in the 14th century. If the past is always better, the 14th century should have been great.

So why is there a pervasive tendency as we get older to think the past was better?

I think it’s because it’s true. As we get older, we are closer to dying. The past is better because we were further away from dying. My own perception is that no matter what our beliefs, our fear of death is very close to the surface.

This is an astrology blog, so how does it relate?

“The past was better” is from the mouth of SATURN.

Saturn is: reality, responsibility, seriousness, the cross of matter, karma, time, restriction, discipline, control, structure, limitations and hard work. The area where Saturn is in your chart indicates an area of difficulty and of restriction. It’s your cross to bear.

I believe Saturn sees the past as better because TIME moves us all into the serious matter of seeing that our lives have a limit. So the mythical past becomes fuzzier but idealized as it recedes in the rear view mirror.

This is such a heavy topic, talking about Saturn and the limits of our physical existence. That’s why people with difficult Saturn placements or lots of Capricorn in their charts are melancholy by nature.

Being a Capricorn, I like to take the topic head on. That’s because being a Capricorn, there is actually much I like about Saturn.

Something our culture has lost (it was better the past 🙂 ) is the concept of “wise elders.” I’m one of those souls who related more to grandparents than parents and prefer older company. I love serious talk. Bring it on, Saturn.

Saturn is the “sadder but wiser girl,” sung about in the Music Man. Saturn is the school of hard knocks. You own everything you learn.

Saturn is Father Time who says harshly to you, “Have you done what you were supposed to do in this life?” Time makes that message more pressing.

When I look at a chart, I look to Saturn to see where our insecurities lie. For example, I have Saturn in the house of communication. I studied a language and here I am writing. I went in the direction of language before I understood astrology. What I learned from learning a language is that I did not communicate very well. Bless her soul, my mother could have told you that. But I learned it by unconsciously going right into my Saturn.

Some of us avoid our Saturns and some are attracted to our Saturns. The placement of Saturn can tell you whether you are doing something for enjoyment or if you are attracted to that area of your personality that needs development.

Let’s look at some Saturns in the charts I’ve written about recently.

Christopher Hitchens (writer) – Saturn in Leo suggests that he lacks confidence and emotional openness.  Leo rules the heart, so there could be heart problems.

Lance Armstrong (athlete) – Saturn in Gemini suggests difficulty in communicating and friendships. Gemini rules the lungs, so there could be breathing problems.

John Kasich (Ohio governor) – Saturn in Libra suggests difficulty in partnerships. Libra rules the abdomen so there could be problems with organs in that area.

Joe Simpson (mountaineer) – Saturn in Capricorn suggests difficulty with responsibility and seriousness. Capricorn rules the knees, enough said.

Saturn, the end.

Breaking news! Christopher Hitchens Wants to Be Liked

An introductory psychology book could probably clue you in to the fact that Rebel Boy writer and social critic Christopher Hitchens truly wants to be liked. Like all famous people, he certainly has his adoring fans.

Astrologically it goes like this. Christopher Hitchens has four planets in Aries (sun, Mercury, Mars, Venus), two planets in Libra (moon and Neptune), two planets in Leo (Pluto and Saturn), one planet in Gemini (Uranus) and one planet in Aquarius (Jupiter).

If you’ve been studying your astrology books, you’ve noticed that Hitchens is all fire and air. He has no earth or water. Possibly his rising sign is in one of these elements, but I don’t know his time of birth to determine the rising sign.

All fire and air means just that – that he’s all fire and air – inspired, intuitive, energetic, enthusiastic, overbearing, impulsive, self-aggrandizing, confidence, gregarious, unrestrained and social. He’s social to the point where he can’t be alone. Hitchens is a true extrovert who gets his energy from others and being around others.

Aries is the cardinal fire sign and Libra is the cardinal air sign. These signs are opposite. While Hitchens portrays his mostly Arian sun (trailblazer, initiator, warrior), his moon represents his reactive nature. Actively he is the warrior, reactively he is the peacemaker.

Aries is self and Libra is other. We reflect off of others to understand our own selves, our definition against them. As a Columbus astrologer puts it, “How do you know if you’re tall unless you compare yourself to others?” That’s Libra. No others, no definition of the self.

It’s an interesting concept. If you were alone on this planet, would you have a personality at all? If no one was around to respond to you, would it matter who or what you were? Would you even think about it?

Moon in Libra suggests that no matter how rebellious Hitchens is, he has an emotional need to be liked. Combined with all this Aries energy, I could see him being passive-aggressive. I do see that in some of his writing, as when he attacks Mother Theresa and Bob Hope after they have already died. My personal feeling is that he would have generated much more heat from attacking these two loved persons while alive over attacking the idea of God.

Attacking the idea of God is a very good way to get people to notice you, the goal of Aries. Aries is also competitive so I think Hitchens may be competing with God himself. The bad news for Hitchens is that God will always be more popular.

Neptune conjunct the moon also makes Hitchens a hopeless romantic. And an idealist. And, actually, naïve about the true motivations of others.

Because all of his planets are in fire and air, Hitchens has no square aspects. Squares are formed when two planets are at a 90 degree angle. Squares represent frustrations in your personality’s various aspects. For example, for someone with sun square Mars, life isn’t fast enough. Sun square Mars is like driving on the freeway with all the orange cones out, where three lanes merge into one.

While a square sounds bad, it represents a drive, a motivating force. While Hitchens has lots of Aries impulsiveness, he doesn’t truly have internal motivation. Unless a force comes from the outside, he probably doesn’t accomplish much. Aries is good at beginning things, but not finishing things. He must be pushed from without to finish projects.

This probably explains his love of debate. While he doesn’t have square aspects in his chart, he does have oppositions (Aries – Libra). He probably doesn’t know at all what he thinks until someone throws out the first idea, the first punch. He’s better at responding than initiating.

The lack of water and earth in the chart represents a lack of emotional connection and physical connection. While Hitchens defended his smoking and drinking, his body was probably sending him signals, signals he ignored because the body is part of the earth, not the world of ideas.

Earth is like this. You feel hungry. You go the store, buy some food, pay for the food, cook the food then eat the food. If this seems simple, it’s because you have earth in your chart. For Hitchens, when he feels hungry, he might simply ignore it. Or grab food if it’s around. Or get up to look for food, see an interesting book and forget the hunger.

Lack of earth is probably why Hitchens is ill today from smoking. He ignored his body and its needs. Ideas last forever, bodies don’t. Bodies are earth. Ideas are air.

Water is like this. You forgot to meet your partner for dinner. You ask, “Are you angry?” and your partner says, “No” in a short and cutting way. You know that “no” means “yes.” You have to deal with the response and person in a feeling, non-logical way. For Hitchens, “no” would mean, “Good, we can go have fun now.”

Often someone with an element missing will find a partner strong in that element. Hitchens probably has a partner who can both cook the meal and tell him when he’s full. This partner probably also has to mention that he looks sad today so that he realizes that the nasty encounter he had truly did bother him.

Having compatible elements and lack of square aspects does bestow something akin to happiness. It’s easy to be yourself because you get along with yourself. You don’t really fight with yourself the way others do.

Hitchens’ chart is the chart of a purely social being, which he demonstrably is. He doesn’t have hidden motivations or a hidden agenda, really. He just wants to be popular and to be liked.

Lance Armstrong: Doper or Hypochondriac?

The whole notion of some drugs being “legal” and others being “illegal” is really quite interesting. What is the inherent property of a drug that is on wrong side of the law?

While drugs are classified as “legal” and “illegal,” alcohol runs free, like a dog in the park chasing whoever it wants. While you have to be of age to drink, once you are, you can buy as much as you want. I can drink all day every day, if I want.

It’s confusing. I’m sure there’s a drug out there that would remove my confusion.

I don’t know if the “performance enhancing” drugs that the sports industry bans as “doping” are illegal in general, or just for professional athletes. I can understand why the sports industry wants “clean” athletes who win competitions based on their own physical accomplishments.

Sports enthusiasts are now anxiously waiting news on whether Lance Armstrong took performance-enhancing drugs. Astrology can’t tell you if he did, but what astrology can tell you is that an individual with sun, moon, Mercury and Pluto in Virgo is a person worries obsessively about his/her health.

Virgo is the picky eater of the zodiac, the one with the special order, and the one in your school who had food allergies before anyone else heard of food allergies. Virgo has the rare disease where you can’t eat lettuce and capers at the same time.

Felix Ungar of the Odd Couple is a Virgo.

Virgo rules the house of health, diet and work. Armstrong is a hard worker too.

With all those planets in Virgo, Armstrong probably worries about everything, not just his health. Armstrong can probably bike a million miles on nervous mental energy alone. I suspect this man has great difficulty relaxing.

With all those planets in Virgo, I would guess that Armstrong takes some sort of drug or medicine for health, but not necessarily a “doping” drug to enhance performance. He’s probably always taken some sort of vitamins, minerals, herbals, medicines or other weird health remedy. Armstrong is the sort of person who would respond to that mail order ad for some exotic plant juice that could cure all illnesses.

Just because someone worries about health obsessively doesn’t mean real health problems don’t exist. I personally don’t believe in hypochondria because if someone feels ills, then there is something out of whack either physically, emotionally or spiritually.

And there’s lots more going on in Armstrong’s chart.

Armstrong has a T-square involving Saturn in Gemini, Mercury in Virgo and a Jupiter/Neptune conjunction in Sagittarius. These are mutable signs, best known for adaptability, changeability and in general avoidance of problems. Armstrong may worry about his problems, but he’s not very good at facing them.

The Saturn/Mercury square between Virgo and Gemini says this man who loves to talk often doesn’t talk. His speech is both practical and critical. Most of his speech probably involves the comparing of things. A lot goes on in the mind of someone with so much Virgo. I’m guessing his mind spins and like a gumball machine, every now and again a gumball shoots out. The gumball is a random thought and those around him may wonder how it relates to the last gumball thought that shot out.

That Jupiter/Neptune conjunction in Sagittarius suggests a strong desire for the sublime. But it squares Saturn and Mercury. Armstrong’s inner “doctor” is telling him no. If Armstrong is taking drugs, I suspect it is for something that calms the mind more than improves the body.

There is yet another configuration in Armstrong’s chart worth noting – a grand air trine with Saturn, Uranus and Mars. Air is sociability and relationships. I can see this with Armstrong because there was a point in time a couple years ago when he seemed on every magazine cover and in every Vanity Fair party picture spread.

But that Saturn hangs in the middle of the grand air trine and the T-square. Saturn in Gemini suggests that Armstrong feels inadequate intellectually. Gemini, as the sign of the twins, also suggests that Armstrong can’t really find another being that feels like a “brother” or soul mate. I don’t mean soul mate in the new agey sense of romantic partner, but of a personal that you feel simply understands you, that you are 100% comfortable being with.

Armstrong has no planets in water signs. Armstrong is not emotionally connected to those around him. He doesn’t really understand the feelings of others. He responds socially, but can’t respond emotionally.

In summary, Armstrong is a picky critical worry wart who socializes a lot, but feels socially inadequate. He likes to have fun, but worries about overextending himself. He wants to try new things, but worries about what might happen. If Armstrong did “dope,” it was probably more out of a sense of improving his health and calming his mind than improving his performance.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn Seeks Freedom in Relationships

Uranus, the planet of freedom and individual expression, is in Aries transiting natal Venus, the planet of pleasure and relationships, in Dominique-Strauss Kahn’s chart. He will be undergoing sudden changes that produce freedom in personal relationships.

That certainly doesn’t look like what’s going on. While some astrologers might try to verify whether a crime was committed or not, I don’t think astrology can do that. Astrology speaks to energies, but not manifestations. Just because someone is holding a gun, doesn’t mean they shot it (even if they have shot it before).

What I do know as an astrologer is that Strauss-Kahn is being charged with a sexual assault and that Uranus is transiting his Venus. While being charged with a crime doesn’t appear to be “freedom,” maybe it is for Strauss-Kahn in some way. I’m guessing he’s actually having problems with other relationships, not just the one making the news.

Strauss-Kahn’s sun is in Taurus and moon in Leo. He has a grand fire trine with the planets Venus (relationships), moon (emotions) and Mars (active principle). This is a fiery sensualist.

Moon in Leo is very demanding of attention. I am guessing that any attention, even negative, is somewhat pleasing to this man.

Leo and Taurus are both fixed signs, so there is intense stubbornness, but also intense fortitude and drive. I am guessing through sheer force of will, he will move on from this situation and become something new in his next earthly incarnation. With that Uranus on his Venus, I even wonder if there wasn’t some deliberate desire to break away from the current situation . . .

Pluto in Capricorn is creating a trine to Strauss-Kahn’s sun in Taurus which means Pluto’s transformational nature is in line with his conscious goals. Neptune in Pisces is on his north node indicating a deliberate sacrifice for a common good.

Uranus, as mentioned above, is in Aries transiting Strauss-Kahn’s natal Venus. That placement also pits it opposite Strauss-Kahn’s natal Uranus in Libra. I keep feeling that he wants to make a break with someone, a big break. Maybe this act he is accused of is a way for him to get out of some commitment or obligation. Uranus is the old “seven-year itch” so I’m wondering if his itch is what landed him in the news.

Seven years from now, Uranus will be transiting Strauss-Kahn’s natal Saturn in Aries. If Strauss-Kahn isn’t challenging authority now, he will be at that time. That is when he will learn more about the limits of one’s personal drive. Uranus will shortly after move onto his sun indicating an entirely different focus of personal identity.

Fire signs are known for optimism and the ability to bounce back from just about any situation. With so much fire in his chart, I suspect Strauss-Kahn will bounce back from this situation, whenever and however it resolves, and will feel a sense of freedom that he doesn’t feel today.
