Meet the Mayor of Cleveland

Sun in Libra – smooth as silk.  Moon in Capricorn – hard as nails.  Meet the mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, Frank George Jackson.

Some charts appear more complex than others.  What does “complex” mean?  It means some parts of us want to do one thing – like get along with other people (Libra).  But other parts of us want something that does not help us get along with others – like pursue ambitions with disregard for the feelings of others (Capricorn).  Understanding a person through his or her chart involves creatively interpreting the potential manifestation of numerous agreeing and conflicting elements.  Like DNA is to our health, the chart is to our personality.  The planets in a chart symbolically represent the raw material that mixes together to create our unique personality.  When an astrologer “delineates” a chart, (s)he tries to write these conflicting/merging elements into the story of our personality.

As a politician, Jackson’s sun in Libra conjunct Neptune represents the beauty, the charm, the charisma of his public and conscious personality.   The moon in Capricorn represents the ambition that drives a pleasure-seeking Libra to fight for a public office and “be somebody.”  Combined these conflicting traits create the ability to soothe and respond diplomatically while at the same time cracking the whip to get things accomplished.

While inner needs for mediation and ambition are difficult enough to balance, Jackson also has Saturn conjunct Pluto in Leo representing a deep-seated lack of confidence and desperate need for respect.  Someone long ago probably told Jackson he “couldn’t do it.”  I suspect much of his life is an effort to prove this wrong.  Now imagine that feeling conflicting with (a “square” in astrological terms) a powerful sex drive and intensity to connect with others.  It’s complex, see?

You will rarely find in public life (politics, entertainment, sports, etc.) a chart that is not complex.  It’s these very inner conflicts that provide drive.  Why would anyone endure the rigors of a political campaign unless fulfilling a very powerful need?  A chart without squares (90 degree angles between planets) and oppositions (180 degree angles between planets) are more pleasant for sure.  Individuals with less complex charts must have external motivation to accomplish their dreams and goals.  Individuals like Frank Jackson have internal motivation that constantly forces them into activity.

Pluto in Capricorn will be transiting Jackon’s natal moon shortly.  Like John Kasich (see 11/18/10 blog), this means emotional changes and changes in relationships with the women in his life.  Saturn is transiting Jackson’s natal sun at the same time indicating some external restriction on Jackson’s need to socialize and partner with others.

Relations with our new governor, John Kasich, will probably be love/hate.  The love:  both men share moon in Capricorn and are able to cut the purse strings (or any other string).  They will share the feeling of life being a “school of hard knocks” that both have traversed successfully.  The hate:  Kasich’s natal Saturn is on Jackson’s natal sun.  Jackson is much more charismatic than Kasich and able to create opportunities through personal charm.  Kasich does not understand this aspect of life because it’s not tangible.  Jackson understands the need for a fancy party whereas Kasich sees it as a waste of money when everyone could have brown-bagged it.

Jackon’s complex chart allows him to understand complex situations.  He is able to adapt to the myriad of situations that arise in life and the conflicts these situations create because inside he already lives this complexity.

Pluto In Capricorn – Christmas is Over

Pluto, the planet of transformation, entered Capricorn in early 2008.  It will not leave Capricorn until 2023.  Long cycles are the norm for the “outer planets” of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.  As outer planets, they signify group trends, societal changes.  These planets are not personal; they do not relate to how your date will be next Friday.  Don’t look for Pluto in your chart to know if you will get a raise.

Capricorn is the sign of authority, structure, the father, order, reputation, status in society and hierarchy.  Pluto just left the sign of Sagittarius – remember the big religious war of Christianity and Islam?  Where did that go?  Today it’s all about the economy and jobs.  Pluto has changed signs.

Think about Christmas.  We begin spending, buying our presents, right after Thanksgiving as the sun just enters Sagittarius.  We become Santa Claus for a month, eating and drinking and shopping.  We gain a little weight.  We run up our credit card balances.  A month later, as the sun enters Capricorn, we then celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25.  The shopping ends.  The eating ends.  In the sign of Capricorn we take back presents, make resolutions, pay bills and try to lose weight.

Pluto just moved from the sign of pre-Christmas cheer to post-Christmas reality.  From 1995-2008 we spent, spent and spent more.  We were encouraged to use our houses as credit, believing that the value would go up, up, up.  We were jolly, running up our credit card bills for Christmas Day.  From 2008-2023 we will be paying the bills, losing the weight, making resolutions.  The politicians would like this to end soon.  News of the “recession being over” makes the news every now and again.  Pluto’s cycle suggests that it will take much longer to “pay our bills” and re-invent our economy for the time when Pluto enters Aquarius.  Aquarius, the sign of freedom and brotherhood, suggests that we are going through a great contraction so that we can move to an economy that is more equal to all.

Sagittarius is expansion and Capricorn is contraction.  I would expect the economy to keep contracting.  In Sagittarius we had bigger cars and bigger homes.  In Capricorn we will have smaller cars and smaller homes.  Our economy is a rubber band snapping back into place.  As we were encouraged to use our houses to spend beyond our means, our houses are taking the hit.  Pluto has hit home.

Capricorn maintains order, structure and authority.  We might see programs of an authoritarian nature as we see during war – rationing, subsidies and continued government spending to create jobs.  Politicians love to say they can “create jobs.”  I’m sure they will do just that!

Many of us had grandparents or great-grandparents that grew up during Great Depression. We knew our elders as frugal, resourceful and economical.  Nothing was wasted, you ate everything on your plate.  The four kernels of corn you couldn’t consume made it into the refrigerator.  The generation growing up during this Pluto in Capricorn cycle will remind us of the grandparents we knew.  Tightening of wallets will most likely draw people together to live in closer proximity, in tighter communities as our grandparents knew.  Economic necessities may bring us back to “old-fashioned” Capricorn pleasures of simple times with friends and family, sharing.  When we have less, we appreciate it more.

Congratulations to John Kasich

Congratulations to John Kasich for working so hard to become Ohio’s 69th governor.  With the sun in Taurus and moon in Capricorn, “work” is our governor’s idea of fun.   Taurus and Capricorn are both earth signs – hardworking, realistic, stubborn, practical, frugal, controlling, ambitious and serious.  Moon in Capricorn is associated with great emotional reserve – think of the relative who doesn’t cry at the funeral and is able to make all the arrangements while those around him are breaking down with grief.  That relative has a Capricorn moon.

Believe any promise he makes to cut or withhold funding, and that includes promises to friends and family too.  Saturn in Libra squares his moon in Capricorn meaning compromise with others causes frustration rather than any sense of accomplishment or peace.  For this strongly earthy man there are two ways to be:  right or wrong.  He’s trying to do things the “right” way so if you agree with him you are right too.

Every now and again an unexpected emotional moment breaks through Kasich’s Capricorn moon armor as Uranus is opposite the moon in his chart.  Inauguration Day, January 11, 2011, may very well be one of those moments with the sun passing through Capricorn triggering this emotional opposition.

Problems with the ladies happen often in January.  We’ll see how the female lieutenant governor, Mary Taylor, fares under her strong-willed, conservative boss who may have old-fashioned ideas about the roles of men and women.  Luckily, Taylor has a moon in Cancer, opposite her boss’ Capricorn moon.  Taylor will most likely fill the role of emotional antenna for her boss.  Helping her boss understand the emotional undercurrents of the world around him may also be part of her job duties.  Mary is the mother, John is the father. She knows when he’s hungry, even when he does not.

Kasich’s natal Pluto square moon adds even more stubbornness to an already fixed personality.  Advice for the un-initiated – do not try to change this man’s mind.  Instead appeal to his sense of fairness, most specifically material fairness.  Material satisfaction is what he understands, not emotional needs or group identity.   Because of this materialism, people and companies that create tangible, physical items will get the most attention – manufacturing, natural resources, construction, textiles, etc.  Bring this man something to touch and he will understand your cause much better.  Ideas must have concrete physical manifestation to be acknowledged.

Pluto, the planet of transformation, has just entered Capricorn.  Kasich, with moon in Capricorn, will be feeling the deep transformation of his emotional reserve beginning in 2011 and culminating in 2013.  Kasich’s most difficult challenge as governor will be having to admit areas of failure publicly.  Failures in relationships hurt the most and during this 2011-2013 there will be changes in relationships, specifically with women.

I expect John Kasich to fulfill all of his campaign promises – his literal personality demands that he do that.
