The Clumsiest Sign of the Zodiac is . . .

Back in the late 1970s, Chevy Chase of Saturday Night Live was the “not ready for prime-time player” who played then-president Gerald Ford. Ford was known to be clumsy so the cute and charming Chase fell all over himself in skit exaggerating that clumsiness.

Clumsy seems to have gone out of style. I haven’t heard anyone called clumsy in a long time.

Maybe today it’s called “balance challenged” or maybe it’s even something the pharmaceuticals are curing with a new pill. I haven’t watched the evening news lately where all the drug commercials seem to reside. Those watching the news must be an ill lot.

“Are you clumsy? Does it interfere with your happiness? Try ‘Pay-attention-ipitor’ which is scientifically proven to reduce accidents in those taking the pill. Do not use while skydiving.”

There is one sign that’s known for forgetfulness of the kind where “you’d forget your head if it wasn’t attached.” That sign seems also to be accident prone. And that sign is?

Sagittarius.

Sagittarius is the archer. It’s the half-man, half-horse archer indicating its wild nature. The archer looks up at the sky, not down on the ground and therefore sometimes trips. The astrological Sagittarius has four legs where the human Sagittarius only has two. Maybe our Sagittarian friends just need two additional legs for balance.

Late President Ford was a sun in Cancer and moon in Sagittarius. Ford also had Neptune conjunct his Cancer sun. This is a man who “wasn’t there.” I bet he was always, and I mean always, daydreaming.

Daydreaming is a big reason for accidents. You’re off in a faraway land not paying attention to the distance in front of your car. That, I believe, is the reason Sagittarius is accident prone and clumsy. They are looking up at the sky in the off chance of catching glimpse of a shooting star.

Sagittarius is concerned with meaning. Its opposite sign, Gemini, is about facts and details. When leaving the house in the morning, Gemini notices the traffic lights have changed pattern, there’s small nick in the car that wasn’t there yesterday and Mrs. Jones has had a visiting car in her driveway three days in a row right after the time Mr. Jones has left for work.

When Sagittarius leaves for work it is thinking about plans later this evening, that cool new Broadway show and that long trip abroad. Oh, the sites to be seen, the airplane trip and the exotic food that await. Food! Oh, I forgot my lunch. Turn around quick. Oops! I didn’t see that tree.

Travel, especially long-distance travel, is in the realm of Sagittarius. It’s certainly possible that Sagittarius encounters more accidents simply because it travels more. One day when I have an astrological database I will measure my blog against the facts. But until then, I can’t confirm.

I brand Sagittarius the clumsiest sign of the zodiac. If you see a Sagittarius behind you on the highway, move over and let them pass. Some part of their wandering mind has seen you. But most likely they are not on the freeway, but on a trip in an exotic land or maybe watching that hawk flying overhead or writing a philosophical treatise. The body is in the car, the mind is in the clouds.

Mitt Romney Needs to Believe in Himself

As Neptune transits Pisces, the two Republican Party front-runners for the presidential candidate have sun in Pisces – Mitt Romney and Rick Perry.

I’m sure no one in politics believes is this silly stuff called astrology, especially in the Republican Party. They are way, way too rational for such illogical nonsense.

If they were interested in this astrological nonsense, maybe they would find Neptune transiting the sun to be the needed extra dose of charisma that boosts their finely-coiffed, beautifully-chiseled candidates. Neptune is about spirituality and merging, losing boundaries with others and dissolving into the whole. Its effect is one of otherworldliness and mystique.

Dissolving into the whole can be a wonderful feeling, if you don’t care for your separate identity and the “whole” isn’t doing something stupid like hunting and killing Jews. That’s the problem Neptune faces – is this merging contributing to something so worthwhile that I should sacrifice myself or is my spiritual side being exploited for someone else’s gain?

Those with guru complexes are often ruled by Neptune. Neptune can sacrifice or it can ask others to sacrifice in its behalf. This is fuzzy stuff which is why Neptune and Pisces are associated with fog.

Perry is clearly evidencing signs of Neptune on the sun with prayer-like activities and religious events. I expect those events to increase and, if he is the Republican candidate, to bring those activities into the campaign.

How is Romney handling this Neptune transit?

From my quick Google search, Romney appears not to have brought religion into the debate. I suspect if he and Perry go head-to-head that religion will find itself part of the dialogue and the mud-slinging that occurs during the nomination and election process. Frankly, I’d like if we brought religious issues into the spotlight and had a great, big national argument about it. It’s important to understand if our head of state believes something that will find its way into policy. If it’s not in the spotlight, it will just be implemented in secret.

Neptune makes one feel special, chosen. The sign of Pisces is ruled by Neptune so it’s Neptune saying, “Be the Pisces you were meant to be.” Both Romney and Perry are getting this message.

For Romney, Neptune will be creating a trine aspect to his Jupiter and moon in Scorpio. That’s good news that says, “You can express that intense, charismatic, passionate moon too.”

Pisces expresses emotions freely but Scorpio does not for fear of losing control. Neptune will allow Romney to express those Scorpionic loves and hates by protecting him under the idea that it is truly a sacrifice for the public good.

Romney has Saturn and Pluto in Leo which suggests that this sensitive man has a very insecure core. He lacks confidence. He has confidence in his beliefs and feelings but no confidence that just showing up on this earth is ticket enough to be alive. He may have trouble with the responsibility of being the man in charge.

Uranus (in Gemini), Venus (in Aquarius) and Neptune (in Libra) form a loose grand trine. This creates for Romney a social ease, a sheer enjoyment of sharing a nice meal with interesting people and having a cigar afterward.

Romney has a balanced chart with enough pleasant aspects (sextiles and trines) to make life enjoyable and just enough unpleasant aspects (squares and oppositions) to provide the friction that is needed in our lives to make us grow.

From an astrological perspective, I believe Romney’s challenge in this process is believing that he can truly be the leader of a nation of people. He has firm religious and emotional beliefs. But does he have a firm belief that he is worthy to be president? Maybe he needs to believe in himself more than in a god. If he can believe in himself, others may as well.

Sarah Palin and Axl Rose Have the Same Problem

Sarah Palin and Axl Rose have the same problem – too many planets in one sign (Aquarius) squared by Neptune in Scorpio.

Palin has Mercury, sun, Mars and Saturn in Aquarius. Her moon is either late Capricorn or early Aquarius. Rose has Mars, Saturn, Mercury, Sun, Jupiter and Venus all in Aquarius.

For starters, having too many planets in one sign gives you a tunnel vision of that sign. Both the positive and negative traits of that sign are enhanced so that there are no nuances to the personality. It’s the characteristics of the sign gone pathological.

Aquarius is the hyper-rational fixed air sign, genius scientist of the zodiac. It’s also the humanitarian and participant in social causes promoting idealism in whatever sphere of life it finds interest. Although Aquarius is the Water Bearer, it is not a water sign and not emotional. Just because I stand in the rain picketing for your cause does not mean I want to hug you.

Aquarius is the oddball of the zodiac, Kramer on Seinfeld who marches to the beat of a different drummer with wild energy and electrified hair.

Neptune is the planet that rules spiritual and emotional merging. In Scorpio, it relates to merging through sex. The generation born with this placement is the generation that dealt with the advent of AIDS. AIDS was recognized in 1981 as Pluto was at the end of Libra. AIDS awareness began when Pluto was in Scorpio. Sex is not recreation – it’s a dangerous sport.

An emotional, sexual Neptune squaring a rigidly idealistic Aquarius creates what I consider a very funky view of reality. Of course talking reality is difficult because everyone believes his/her view of the world to be correct. However, Neptune square Aquarius is definitely going to view the world from glasses colored very differently from the prevailing glass color.

In simpler terms, both Palin and Rose are weird.

Rose’s chart scares me a bit. It’s so intensely Aquarius with moon in Pisces (which is ruled by Neptune) and Neptune squaring all those planets in Aquarius. Reality, for Rose, must be like staring at the sun, like a strobe light when you’re drunk, like a laser pointed into the eyes. It must feel harsh because Aquarius is all nerve and Pisces has no boundaries so it’s like living with your nerves on the outside of your skin rather than on the inside. Every puff of wind must hit Rose like a windstorm.

Palin has a little more balance with Venus and Jupiter in Aries and Uranus and Pluto in Virgo. The aspects of her Pluto (in Virgo), Neptune (in Scorpio) and Jupiter (in Aries) create the “Finger of God,” or Yod. Jupiter in Aries is where the finger points.

Aries is about self-determination and self-aggrandizement. The finger seems to be saying, when the collective needs get too strong, think of yourself and think for yourself.

Aquarius can think for itself mighty well, but the Neptune square keeps saying, “What about everyone else? You are being selfish.”

Rose has Uranus in Leo opposing all of his Aquarian planets and Uranus in Virgo opposing moon in Pisces. This poor guy has no avenue of relief in his personality. Everywhere he turns there is a conflict or opposition.

Long ago I read a story where Rose said he’s nocturnal. I bet he chooses to avoid daylight because the stimulation of light and people is too great. Maybe he should move to Alaska during the winter when light is rare to non-existent.

Palin and Rose, should they ever meet, may feel like kin. To be a very, very round peg in a world of very, very square holes must generate some loneliness. Others may try to understand the quirks of our personalities, but to see the world in the same way we must share the same glasses.

Venus in Virgo: Love Me Perfect

When blogging about New York Times critic Michikio Kakutani’s chart, I discovered that The Corrections author Jonathan Franzen called her, according to New York Magazine, “the stupidest person in New York.”

Franzen, if you recall, is the man who snubbed Oprah Winfrey’s book club and his own nomination to it. He later retracted and sat with Oprah calling the visit “an honor.”

I had to take a look at the chart of this man who both hates his critics and his fans. If you criticize him, you are stupid. If you like him but are not a worthy person in his eyes, you are stupid as well.

Franzen has sun in Leo and moon in Leo’s opposite sign of Aquarius. Leo, now that’s a sign that loves attention and lots of it. Franzen’s memoirs, in fact, attest to his love of attention.

Leo rules the heart and while Leo loves attention to the point of pushing others off the stage, the open heart and loving nature of Leo usually makes up for this need for full, center stage. A big, sincere hug and a dozen roses wash away resentments caused by Leo’s need to shine.

Juanes, Colombian rock star, has both sun and moon in Leo. While he may be insufferable to those near him, he can be seen in Internet images hugging his adoring female fans. Leo Juanes loves his fans. Leo Franzen does not.

Why doesn’t Franzen open his hairy Leo paws to his adoring fans? What’s gone wrong?

While Franzen’s sun is in Leo, the moon is in the opposite sign of Aquarius. Leo is about self-expression and Aquarius is about shared, community goals. That’s the natural polarity and natural conflict.

But I don’t think that’s the problem here. Aquarius loves groups as much as Leo, just differently. Aquarius is the friend who calls 100 people every time he/she goes out the door. Aquarius is friend to everyone, best friend to no one.

I think Franzen’s disdain of critics and fans is due to  a conjunction of Mars and Venus in Virgo with Pluto shadowing in the early degrees of Virgo.

Virgo is about perfection, nit-picky perfection. Virgo is also concerned with work and health.

Venus is about pleasure. Mars is about action. Franzen is actively seeking the perfect pleasure – the perfect dinner, the perfect wine, the perfect book, the perfect companion, the perfect date, the perfect pen and, it seems, the perfect fan.

This is a man who sends the steak back with specific instructions on medium rare. This is a man who changes seats ten times in the theater to find the perfect spot. This is a man who insults you loudly if you sit in front of him after he’s found the best spot in the theater.

Mars conjunct Venus, according to my meetup astrologer, indicates that “you want to fight with the one you love.” In Virgo it should be called “nit picking with the one you love.”

Franzen says in his memoirs that he and his ex-wife did just that. He says, “Deploring other people — their lack of perfection — had always been our sport.”

Wow! That’s Venus and Mars in Virgo talking. I don’t have Franzen’s time of birth but for this Venus and Mars conjunction in Virgo to override his Leo nature, it probably is on his ascendant.

If this conjunction is on the ascendant, then the Leo sun is in the 12th house, the “hidden house,” the house of secrets. When your sun is in this house, you rarely show your true personality.

This assumption would put Neptune and Jupiter, both in Scorpio, in the 3rd house of communications. Hmm. I like this. Franzen’s writing involves lots of sex and masturbation, very Scorpio.

Trying to determine time of birth from events in one’s life is called rectification. My rectification would put moon in Aquarius in the 6th suggesting health problems involving nerves, breathing and circulation. Aquarius is a unique, unusual sign so there may be a health problem that is just odd. Like the third finger on the left hand having no sensation. Or some perceptual oddity.

Franzen’s public image appears to be ruled by three planets in Virgo – Venus, Mars and Pluto. Yet there is so much more in his chart than this schoolmarm of a sign.

Maybe if Franzen showed more of that loving Leo nature the world would love him in return in the way he wants to be loved, naturally. Instead his Virgo is saying “love me perfect or I don’t want your love.”

What’s so vulnerable about being a Leo, the king of the jungle? Franzen is botching the energy of this wonderful sign. People love Leo, naturally. The Virgo in him needs to stop analyzing why.

Michiko Kakutani – the Emily Dickinson of Criticism

Michiko Kakutani, famous New York Times book critic, is a feared authority on literature. Because of that power, some very famous authors have said some very nasty things about her. I haven’t seen any rebuttal.

Kakutani’s sun is in Capricorn, the very sign of authority. Her moon is either in late Cancer or early Leo. From my research last night, I’m guessing Cancer. Here’s why:

  • Leo moon would be out in public promoting itself and seeking attention.
  • Kakutani has been called reclusive, which is a Cancer trait.
  • Kakutani appears to truly read in their entirety the books she reviews and possibly other writings of those authors. That just takes a lot of time and a Cancer moon is more willing to sit under a blanket with a book than a Leo moon. Reading is a habit of the introverted.

Capricorn and Cancer are opposite signs, indicating Kakutani was born right after a full moon. Capricorn is about external authority and Cancer is about internal feelings.

Kakutani’s natal Jupiter and Uranus are also in Cancer indicating a very sensitive person who reacts unexpectedly and extremely to others’ actions. Mars in Pisces and Saturn in Scorpio form with the Cancer planets a grand water trine. This indicates extreme emotional sensitivity. The grand water trine has been called “the whine trine.”

Kakutani seems the Emily Dickinson of criticism. It wouldn’t surprise me if Kakutani is a closet poet or author, too shy to put her books in public light for fear of the criticism she knows will arrive, regardless of the quality of her work.

I imagine a cedar chest full of writings, on old-fashioned parchment paper sprinkled with rose water.

Kakutani’s sun and Mercury are in Capricorn which is critical by nature. Really, I don’t see how book or movie reviewers can like anything after a few years. Who can read or see the same themes over and over without getting a little critical (or bored)?

Mercury in Capricorn is serious, practical and critical in communication. I saw one criticism of Kakutani’s critical writing style that accused her of hating or loving everything and not explaining why.

I wonder if more than hating or loving everything, Kakutani isn’t simply Capricorn practical and logical. In statistics the bell curve states that most things are within a certain range (aka “average”) with only a few outliers on the good and bad side of that curve. Maybe rather than hating or loving everything, Kakutani is probably ranking most works a solid C and only the truly exceptional get an A.

It makes sense.

The current planetary cardinal grand cross configuration (Pluto in Capricorn, Uranus in Aries, Saturn in Libra and Mars in Cancer) will be hitting Kakutani’s chart like hurricane Irene. Both her internal and external lives will go through intense changes. I see some work and family changes coming.

With Pluto transiting her natal sun, Kakutani will be going through some career changes. Her voice of authority will transform. How? I have no idea. Maybe she will get bored with reviewing books and try something new, like starting her own business or taking a government role.

Or maybe she will decide that a focus on her own works (Cancer) is more important. Maybe we’ll see a volume of love poetry with her name written in bold calligraphy.

Jimmy Carter wasn’t too embarrassed to publish poetry. Maybe Kakutani can take inspiration from Carter, come out of the cave and show us some exceptional writing.

Dick Cheney Needs Some Lovin’

Dick Cheney, former Vice President, needs some lovin’. Neptune will be transiting his Pisces moon, opposing natal Neptune, and Pluto is conjunct his Capricorn Venus. His emotional life will be undergoing some intense changes.

Venus in Capricorn is extremely selective about friends. A little snobbish, if you will. Venus in Capricorn is the fraternity brother or sorority sister. This is about friendships through social conventions and structures rather than friendships borne of bumping into someone at the gas station and lending them a dollar.

Possibly that clique of friends isn’t living up to the agreement to treat Cheney with Capricorn respect. Maybe Cheney’s memoirs which he said according to an Associated Press story, “would cause heads to explode” is a way to get some respect.

With Moon in Pisces and Venus in Capricorn I expect these memoirs contain more than a bit of self-pity for perceived sacrifices Cheney has made. Cheney’s sun in Aquarius is detached and aloof. But Pisces moon is not.

Cheney was known to keep secrets well and demand others do the same. I consulted eHow.com to learn about the psychology of secrets.

According to eHow.com, benign secrets contribute to a healthy sense of self and malignant secrets can cause “deep psychological anguish.” I learned that malignant secrets can “diminish the quality of people’s relationships, alienating them from others and imposing loneliness.”

Cheney may be feeling lonely, not just from keeping secrets, but from having a very emotional moon that he does not express openly.

Jupiter is transiting Taurus now passing Cheney’s natal Jupiter/Saturn conjunction in Taurus. Money may have also played a need in publishing these memoirs at this time.

Neptune left the sign of Aquarius this year. If I were a fortune-telling-type of astrologer, I would have guessed these memoirs would have been published in 2008 when Neptune was transiting Cheney’s Mercury in Aquarius.

Cheney has a bunch of planets in the last four signs of the zodiac – Sagittarius (Mars), Capricorn (Venus), Aquarius (sun, Mercury) and Pisces (moon). These signs are about public life, mass conscious and the populace. I hope Cheney explains in his memoirs what drove him to public life and to keep secrets in the public’s behalf.

Natal Neptune opposes natal moon in Pisces suggesting an imaginative, dreamy, psychic but melancholy personality. Cheney might be feeling a little depressed right now.

The current grand cross in cardinal signs (Pluto in Capricorn, Uranus in Aries, Saturn in Libra and Mars in Cancer) isn’t too hard on Cheney’s chart. I don’t think he’s going through the stressful relationship problems others are.

I suspect Cheney wants “heads to explode” for several reasons: 1) he wants respect; 2) he wants us to know what he sacrificed for us and 3) he just needs some attention.

If Cheney wants heads to explode, then maybe his own head is exploding from his cherished secrets and deep feelings that no one understands simply because he won’t tell anyone about these feelings. Cheney is smart enough to find a creative way to unleash these intense feelings.

That Pluto transit over natal Venus makes me believe that Cheney feels let down by his friends. Friendships based on structure often fall apart when the structure goes away. Maybe Cheney needs to let his Aquarius sun and Pisces moon do the friend picking. His friends will be more loyal and truly loving that way.

Mexico is a Wealthy Virgo

On September 16, 1810 at daylight, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the church bells in the city of Dolores, Mexico to “summon the people from the countryside” [Fire & Blood by T. R. Ferenbach] in revolt against the Spanish government.

September 16 is now Mexico’s Independence Day.

That makes Mexico a Virgo. At sunrise, the sun is in the 1st house giving Mexico a Virgo rising as well.

It seems odd that the family-oriented, fun-loving Mexicans are ruled by the pristine earth sign Virgo. What’s more, Mexico’s moon is in earth sign Taurus.

On second thought, maybe it makes sense.

To Americans, Mexico is a poor neighbor that forces throngs of people to risk their lives crossing our border to find work.

Work. Now that’s in the realm of Virgo. I smell something here.

While the numbers vary, it’s estimated that undocumented Mexicans in the US send $25 billion back home. That’s quite a chunk of change added to the Mexican economy.

Mexico’s natural resources, according to Answers.com include:

  • Oil
  • Gas
  • Silver
  • Bismuth
  • Celestite
  • Fluorspar
  • Fishing
  • Forestry

Mexico also happens to have a robust tourist industry that includes mountains, beaches and extensive Aztec, Mayan and Toltec ruins.

Mexico has it all.

So how did this country become so poor?

If you get past the television images and travel past the border, there is a Mexico that is very different than the image of the poor campesino you see on TV. There is great wealth in Mexico.

My political view is that Mexico’s economic problems are class problems. Mexico is a country with abundant resources. It’s class that has separated people from the wealth.

Both the bulimic and anorexic think obsessively about food.  I think Mexico may be doing the same about money. A great focus on earthly, material goods has made an anorexic of a country filled with plenty.

Those Mexicans that go abroad often work in service industries (ala Virgo) and work very, very hard. These people didn’t change by crossing the border; they would work hard in their own country, I assume, if the opportunities were available.

Mexico’s Virgo sun is opposed by Pluto in Pisces. Neptune is transiting Pisces right now and in the next few years Mexico may be having more struggles with work and health issues.

Pluto is currently transiting Capricorn which creates a grand earth trine for Mexico. If I came from outer space (as an astrologer) and didn’t know anything about Mexico, I would say, “Great times of material comfort.”

Maybe Pluto will transform Mexico’s economic system as it is doing to economies around the world. Maybe Mexico will look in the mirror and realize that abundance is within.

Felipe Calderon Should Avoid Fog

Latin American countries like fiery rulers and Felipe Calderon, President of Mexico, fits the bill.

Sun in Leo and moon in Aries is a volcanic mix. Fire is expressive, enthusiastic, extroverted and courageous. On the negative side fire is self-centered in that it demands all the attention. Usually fire has more energy than the other elements and naturally gets center stage. But if they don’t . . . there’s a fiery hell to pay.

Calderon’s Venus in Libra is opposite a most-likely moon in Aries (some chance of it being in late Pisces). Transiting Uranus in Aries (just left Pisces) is bouncing all over that opposition of love and feeling. There are some sudden relationship changes here.

Calderon is suffering the same relationship issues as the rest of us as the cardinal grand cross (Pluto in Capricorn, Uranus in Aries, Saturn in Libra and Mars in Cancer) applies friction to any natural friction in our charts. His friction is fiery passion versus harmonious pleasure.

Which does he like more? He probably goes back and forth from being a gentle companion to a raging jealous lover.

Many of the politicians I’ve been looking at lately have transits to the moon. Maybe for a politician the moon is more than the women in his/her life. Maybe the moon is the populace and for politicians maintaining a relationship with the populace feels the same as maintaining a relationship with an emotional woman.

Or maybe it’s common for politicians to have a lover tucked away.

Or maybe both.

Calderon’s natal Uranus, Pluto and Mercury are in Virgo and Neptune will be opposing all those planets in the near future. Natal Jupiter in Pisces will be filtering that psychic, spiritual energy.

I worry about this aspect for Calderon. Leo expresses in possibilities and sometimes, how shall we say it, “exaggerates” the truth. Calderon’s natal Mercury in Virgo is a detailed speaker and probably reins in some of that Leo storytelling.

However, I worry that any lies Calderon is telling (we all lie, I’m not judging) will come out in a very unusual way. Neptune suggests leaks of information that have imaginative elements added that create a weird story.

Neptune rules images and FOG, is diffuse and undifferentiated and wants to merge.

The energy reminds me of the movie “The Informant” (spoiler alert) where the supposed-hero keeps changing his story and then you learn that maybe he’s not what he seems. The information keeps changing, the story doesn’t make sense and absolute truths get sputtered at the wrong time. Even at the very end he’s changing the story. The story never ends . . .

The Neptune transit involves Piscean and Virgo energy. Those energies can relate to health, physical and spiritual. Possibly Calderon will have a health issue or he may be aware of one that exists in his country, ala the swine flu.

Calderon, like the rest of us, is living in interesting times. We each have our challenges right now. Calderon’s are going to be rough. He probably knew that when he became President of Mexico.

Maybe that’s why we elect fire signs in the Americas. What other sign would take on this kind of challenge and believe he/she could be successful?

Leo.

Pisces Presidents

As the Republican Party is serving up two Pisces sun presidential candidates (Romney and Perry), I wanted to take a look at past Piscean presidents. Of our 43 presidents, there have been four with sun in Pisces:

  • George Washington (1789-1797)
  • James Madison (1809-1817)
  • Andrew Jackson (1829-1837)
  • Grover Cleveland (1885-1889, 1893-1897)

The 18th and 19th centuries were better environments for Piscean US presidents. The 20th century produced none. Maybe the 21st century will see a return of this mutable water sign in the White House.

Pisces

Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac and is a mutable water sign. Mutable means changeable and adaptable. Water means sensitive and emotional. Pisces is the “psychic” of the zodiac, picking up emotional and mental impressions as a sponge soaks water.

Because Pisces is so sensitive and impressionable, it can be easily manipulated. And because Pisces sees through people, it can also manipulate.

Pisces has also been called the “garbage can” of the zodiac in that it contains a little piece of each sign. It’s a collector of psychic leftovers from the other eleven signs.

Pisces is sympathetic and empathetic and makes a good counselor or religious practitioner. Pisces can be sympathetic and understanding to the point of suffering abuse. Think of the spouse who lives with an abusive partner and believes, each time, it is the last abuse because it sees the goodness in the person.

“Believe” is the keyword of Pisces.

Imaging the past in the future

In looking at the charts of these Pisces presidents and the configurations they were born and governed in, one stands out as governing in a time similar to our own – Andrew Jackson.

Andrew Jackson hardly seems the sensitive Pisces as he was known as “Old Hickory” a dueling individualist. Or maybe he was so sensitive that he had to murder those that disagreed with (dissed) him. Jackson lived in a pre-Tweet universe, so I don’t have the scoop on his motivations.

Jackson had sun in Pisces and moon in Virgo, as does Republican candidate Rick Perry. The outer planets in Jackson’s natal horoscope and presidential term are much like the transits today:

Outer planet

Jackson natal

Jackson term

Today

Uranus Aries Aquarius Aries
Neptune Virgo Capricorn Pisces/Aquarius
Pluto Capricorn Aries Capricorn

During Jackson’s presidency and today there are outer planets in Aries and Capricorn. We are dealing again today with the issues of society structure and government oversight versus self-determination. The Aquarius/Pisces energy is about the masses, Aquarius in a political, idealistic sense and Pisces in a spiritual sense.

Jackson Presidency

Here are a few Jackson presidency highlights compliments of Wikipedia:

  • Opposition to the National Bank
  • Indian Removal Policy
  • Nullification Crisis (South Carolina wanted to nullify a federal law on tariffs)

Congress renewed the charter for the National Bank and Jackson vetoed it. Jackson’s veto is an interesting read and quite prescient. Here are a couple interesting lines of the veto:

  • “It appears that more than a fourth part of the stock is held by foreigners and the residue is held by a few hundred of our own citizens, chiefly of the richest class.”
  •  “It is easy to conceive that great evils to our country and its institutions millet flow from such a concentration of power in the hands of a few men irresponsible to the people.”

To assess Jackson’s presidency is in the realm of political science, not astrology. When I read about the issues of Jackson’s presidency I have a lot of political thoughts, but my astrological thought is that underneath the particular issues of Jackson’s day are issues that are coming to the fore again today.

  • How much federal control?
  • How much debt and foreign control?
  • Who are our citizens?

You could say we’ve been struggling with this for 235 years in each presidency in some way, especially federal versus state control.

Symbolism

Astrology for me is about symbolism. The symbolism of Jackson’s time seems to have a relation to the symbolism of our time.

It’ll be interesting to see how we manage our big banks, foreign investment and Indians/immigrants this time around.

Why so many breakups in 2011?

I noticed that someone searched “why so many breakups in 2011?” That’s a very interesting question. I was just having a conversation yesterday with someone about all the breakups occurring with ourselves and with others.

Grand Cross in Cardinal Signs

Currently there is a grand cross in the sky in the cardinal signs:

  • Uranus in Aries
  • Mars in Cancer
  • Saturn in Libra
  • Pluto in Capricorn

In the past year, Jupiter went through Aries stoking the friction of this cross.

Let’s talk about the cardinal signs and relationship:

Aries / Libra – this is the SELF / OTHER polarity

Cancer / Capricorn – this is the INNER SELF (family) / OUTER SELF (career) polarity

The cardinal cross is about me-you-family-workplace. In our image of the American 1950’s household,  Mother was about you/family and Father was about me/workplace.

As women changed, the roles became more complicated. Those roles are still changing and a collapsing economy (and societal structures) forces those roles to change even more.

Planets in the Cardinal Grand Cross

Now for the planets –

Pluto is transformation that is usually preceded by destruction, unless you decide to simply let go of the old worn-out patterns.

Uranus is enlightenment and inspiration which is usually preceded by sudden, unexpected and shocking events, unless you simply wake up to what’s around you.

Saturn is the law of contraction and is the structure of our world. Saturn can feel good or bad depending on how you naturally feel about laws and rules.

Mars is the active principle. Mars gets you out of bed in the morning to greet the new day. How do you wake each morning?

Why so many breakups?

Saturn in Libra is sending contracting energy through relationships. While there are a lot of breakups, some are living and dealing with this contraction. That means the relationship is not fun right now. Other relationships contract into a void because the energy of the relationship can’t handle the contraction. In a sense, there is nothing left. It’s contracted out of existence.

Pluto in Capricorn is the transformation of our societal structures. We are experiencing a recession or depression of the economy. That stress is adding to any tensions already extant in your relationships. I believe at the end of the Pluto in Capricorn transit, our economic, family and relationship structures will be different, more egalitarian.

Uranus in Aries is the enlightenment of self. This transit says impulsively, “I’m going to do it myself. I don’t need you involved.” This is a great feeling of power but it does not support partnerships, family life or the “teamwork” of a workplace.

Mars in Cancer is energy directed toward family. Spending time with family can be very comforting. No matter how much you fight with your family, they know you. You can put your feet up on the coffee table (unless your family has a lot of Virgo or Capricorn energy). Family life is comforting, but does not always help you grow.

Combined energies

The combined energies of this grand cross mean that we are having great stress between the ME – YOU and FAMILY – WORK axes. Pluto is ripping apart our work world and our self, family and partnerships are going to change as a result.

The astrologer Tom Lescher (New Paradigm Astrology) has a weekly YouTube Pele Report which I find the most insightful and compassionate view of what is now occurring in relationships.

Columbus local Jennifer Sieck of Intuitive Voice Inner Guidance says it this way:

“Right now there is an opportnunity in the culture at large to deepen & do inner work torward ascension but there is just as strong a need too for some to go their own way–strike out & try something new. It takes maturity to go deeper & it isn’t always fun/sexy but it might be what is required for some. And for others that need to be new again & define things solely for yourself may win out. Neither is right or wrong, in either case it is important to do what Jungians call “holding the tension of the opposites” until the individual’s need rises to the top by sitting with it over time. The energy from Aries (the 7 year thing) that we are in is encouraging this tendency to react without pause in many ways & in many arenas.”
