Ohio Astrology Endorses Taylor Swift for President of the United States in 2020

It wasn’t the first time I’d seen the commercial. In it for a Capitol One credit card promotion, singer Taylor Swift enacts several food server roles (bumbling them all) the last being a waitress at an old-fashioned diner where she winks at two young, star-stunned, girls at the counter.

Seeing it this time, I remembered being a young girl admiring older, non-familial, women – the bubbly school teacher, an older girl down the street, Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart, Agnetha and Frida from ABBA amongst others. While I haven’t completely lost this feeling, it’s much rarer.

As young girls we often admire older, non-familial, women. As older women, seem to have left our idols in youth.

Why?

A whole book can be devoted to a subject like this. My own highly-summarized, abbreviated view is that our earth overvalues yang energy over yin energy creating imbalance. Yang energy is outwardly directed and exhibited more by males. The outward pursuits of male energy are more valued as represented by the income provided to those pursuits.

Yin energy is inwardly directed and exhibited more by females. Female pursuits often involve care giving and relationship enhancement which are not a high-paying pursuits. Yet, if we asked people about their values, they would probably list family as the number one value.

This is what I believe causes the income inequality. It’s not about gender, it’s about values.

And through this value imbalance, adult females have lost their youthful, pure admiration of other females, the kind of adoration that makes you want to put up a poster of their image in your bedroom.

Female Energy

For the United States to elect (if it ever does) a female president, it must value yin energy, which it does not. The current alpha male president is more a projection of yang energy than the projection of presidential authority. And the corollary to that projection is that if he is removed, strong male qualities go with him, as though maleness and strength will be obliterated.

Being female does not mean being 100 percent yin as being male does not mean being 100 yang; however, I would argue, no matter how strong the woman or sensitive the man, you will find beneath the external or internal energy patterns.

Astrologically, there is an influx of earth energy, specifically Capricorn which is the authority figure, which is often male. There is also earth energy coming from Taurus which adds a stubborn desire to hang on to what we have and what is known. Neither is entirely yin or yang but you can say earth values strength and stability.

Astrologically it’s not surprising we are drawn to strong, authoritarian figures. We The People nourished and energized the person and the image that is now taking all of the air out of the room. The excessive yang energy takes away our yin energy ability to be quiet and reflective.

A Swift Presidency

Taylor Swift inspires the admiration of young girls. Possibly this brilliant star of the female gender can help the girls and future women of the world to retain this ability to admire themselves.

What would a Swift Presidency look like?

According to this Astrotheme horoscope, Swift has sun in fiery Sagittarius and a Jupiter/moon conjunction in sensitive Cancer. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter so the expansiveness and generosity of Jupiter expands into the emotions and reactions (moon).

A Swift Presidency, then, would be highly responsive to the emotional needs of others. Sagittarius and Jupiter love the “foreign” other and experiencing foreign and unusual states of being. Swift’s Venus in Aquarius also embraces the different, the unusual, and the eccentric. Swift, clearly, would not send immigrants at the border home to dangerous grounds.

Swift the Sagittarius would most likely work with both houses of Congress to develop a rational and fair immigration policy.

Swift was born in a generation Ohio Astrology sees as the generation that will resolve the authoritarian mess we have consciously and willingly walked into. Born with Uranus, Neptune and Saturn in Capricorn, there was a great idealization of business and authority. Pluto began transiting Capricorn in 2008 which crossed over all these planets in Swift’s and her generation’s horoscopes.

There is great learning, then, about the nature of authority and one’s place in society. Swift has clearly channeled the ambitions of Capricorn into the emotional connection of Cancer. Swift, then, has the Capricorn mettle to face the political onslaughts that occur as president of the United States.

Swift, hopefully, would elect some cabinet members of this same generation to oversee critical areas of societal restructuring.

The Midheaven (representing one’s reputation and role in society) in Swift’s chart is in Virgo so the many people on the planet born between 1957 – 1971 with Pluto and/or Uranus in Virgo will find her transformative with a focus on environmental and food purity. Swift is sure to win the majority of the vote for those aged 49-63.

With natal Pluto and Mars both in Scorpio, Swift is no pushover. While she may be sensitive (moon in Cancer) and sometimes head-in-the-sky (sun in Sagittarius), Scorpio is well aware of the machinations of others. Swift will feel out the power plays before the players even know they are conducting them.

In summary, Swift’s ability to emotionally connect, balance of yin and yang energy and focus on transforming society make her the stuff we want in the Oval Office but rarely (maybe never?) have.

The Resurrection of Mr. Rogers

If you’re keen on worshiping a human being, it’s best to choose someone deep in the annals of history. Find an ancient sage-king that taught humans to read, write, grow corn, or turn wheat into bread. Choose a being whose life is shrouded in mystery whose daily habits are completely unknown or lost in time.

You may even want to look to a galaxy far, far away for this person.

The closer in time your object of worship lived (or lives), the more likely that this person will have noticeable flaws. The more a being is physically present and near to you, the greater these flaws seem, sometimes to the point where you’d like them to leave the room because of the way they chew.

This is what Ohio Astrology calls The Idol-Time Inverse Adoration Curve. The data is currently being compiled and the book will be available in the next decade or two. If bookstores still exist then, look for it there.

For now, Ohio Astrology recommends when choosing a person of worship and adoration, think “time and distance.” Absence, you may have heard, makes the heart grow fonder.

Mr. Rogers Films

Speaking of idols, the late Fred Rogers who created the children’s show Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood is the subject of two recent films – the 2018 documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and this year’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood which is based on a true story of a journalist writing an article about Rogers.

In both films, the “saintliness” of Rogers is questioned – was he really that nice, that simple? Spoiler alert – neither will show you a Fred Rogers diametrically opposed to his on-screen image. If you’re a sensitive sort, both are tearjerkers.

Why resurrect Fred Rogers? And why now?

Pisces and Neptune

According to this Astrotheme horoscope, Rogers had both sun and moon in the sign of Pisces. His sun is in 29 degrees called the anaretic degree (the last degree of the sign) and his moon at 11 degrees. He also had Mercury and Venus at 2 degrees of Pisces for a total of four planets in Pisces.

In the 29th degree, it’s the end of a cycle of the energy, the extreme of the energy. What is Pisces energy?

Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac and is mutable and water. That means it’s the most flexible and adaptive of the signs, often to the point of sacrifice putting others’ needs first. Pisces is sensitive and empathetic in the extreme and often does not have clear emotional boundaries and picks up the feelings of others as its own. Pisces is the therapist who listens without judgment and who may fulfill its own needs by a subtle manipulation of yours. Pisces is dreamy and can seek to “escape” the harsh world of reality through drugs, alcohol or media. Or it can be extremely creative instead.

The ruler of Pisces is Neptune. Neptune is an ethereal, other-worldly energy which led astrologer Liz Greene to write an entire book on it. Neptune transits each sign for about 15 years and idealizes what that sign represents. Neptune is the desire to merge with others and that hazy glow of attraction is Neptune. Neptune is not the raw physical attraction, but the emotional and mystical attraction such as the screaming girls felt when seeing the Beatles.

Idols and gurus are Neptunian – they channel emotions for us and often take us out of ourselves. They inspire us to do things we might not do on our own (sometimes positive, sometimes not). They love us unconditionally.

Fred Rogers

Since 2011, Neptune has been transiting Pisces, the sign it rules. So it’s both comfortable and transmitting pure Neptunian energy. It’s idealizing itself.

At the time of the 2018 release of Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Neptune was at 16 degrees of Pisces and at about the same place for this year’s release of It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Because Neptune is so far away, it often appears to travel backwards (called retrograde) then goes forward again. Between the two film releases, Neptune went retrograde.

Neptune, then, is idolizing the energy brought forth by Fred Rogers beginning in 1968. In that year, there was an unusual conjunction of outer planets Pluto and Uranus in the sign of Virgo, which is the sign opposite Pisces. In 1968, they were traveling in 20-25 degrees of Virgo. Saturn was in Pisces at the time and challenge to authority was paramount.

According to the films on Rogers, he created his show because of what he saw on television, to provide an alternate, positive image for children. Remember that 1968 was a year of social upheaval, widespread recreational drug use and “counter culture. Think of Mr. Rogers’ red sweater during a time of bell bottoms and paisley prints. At the time, it might have felt backwards.

According to the documentary (as I never watched the show), serious themes were addressed, not bypassed such as war. What Rogers accomplished was truly Piscean – the processing of feelings, the feelings that occur during regular, human life.

To be male (in this country at least) and an open feeler is very brave. In fact, the only place where it is socially acceptable to be male and sensitive is in a religious life which Rogers also pursued. Rogers 29 degrees of sensitive Pisces actually allowed him to cross over into the 1 degree boldness of Aries – it was a bold choice, a streak of individuality. Fred Rogers made a decision to be 29 degrees of Pisces.

In other Pisces traits, we see Rogers swam daily (Pisces is represented by the fish and usually loves water) and had musical ability (which is both Neptunian and Venusian). Moving image, of course, being under the spell of Neptune.

Why Now?

As Neptune transits its own sign, we clearly need Neptunian figures. Neptune can be the rescuer, the savior. Unfortunately Neptune carries such spiritual power that we also project our negative onto it where it can become scapegoat and sacrificial object.

Our comfort in Neptune may stem from the abundance of ambitious Capricorn energy right now. Since 2008, Pluto has been transiting that sign. In very late 2017, Saturn joined. Jupiter just joined on December 2. Capricorn is an earth sign associated with authority, social conscious and social structures. Pluto is transforming all of this which is why society seems to be deconstructing itself. It’s a critical time of choice on how much we want others to control our lives.

As much as people say they dislike government and want it to change, no one wants their house to lose value or their job to move overseas. There is much humans proclaim that is out of sync with the striving for stability and material increases that drives most lives.

So along comes Neptune for comfort. And Neptune brings Mr. Rogers who gave us the message in 1968 that having a bad day was normal and we could feel our feelings and not let our feelings take us into chaos and aggression (too bad we didn’t listen).

As the great shifts in society occur, Neptune has resurrected Mr. Rogers, a man who walked with us but we mostly ignored because he didn’t seem real; he was something children could believe in but adults could not. And some tried (and still try) to make the saintly Rogers into a regular human, as he was, but looking for his flaws and hidden “badness.” And even if he was nasty in ways we do not yet know (or as a nasty co-worker proclaimed to me), I suspect Neptune will keep him on the pedestal of adoration at least for the next five years as it makes its way through Pisces.

There is, of course, always the option to stop worshiping other humans. There’s no law (right now) that says we must. But if we must, why not Mr. Rogers? Why not now?

Thoughts on Mercury during Mercury Retrograde

While lying on the electrical stimulation machine at the chiropractor’s office, my thoughts were about the astrological Mercury. It’s clear I’m neurologically programmed for astrology as spine stimulation leads to thoughts of planets and signs.

While it’s a common cliché that communication is critical to healthy relationships, there’s so much evidence to the contrary. If all it takes is talking, why don’t people, who talk all the time, get along?

If talking were the cure to dysfunctional interactions, then this should be the happiest planet in the whole entire universe.

As a meditator I’m always pleasantly surprised how a group of individuals can live and sit together for days quietly with no conflict. Maybe, too, I remember all the meditation teacher says because I’m quiet and listening. Knowing I won’t be able to ask a question, I don’t spend mental time preparing for the question or assessing whether the teacher has already answered it. I just listen.

How many of your daily troubles stem from talking? Is talking the solution to problems or the cause?

In meditation retreats, there is agreement on how we will behave and share space. It’s the agreement, not the talking, that makes for conflict-free time together. And by not talking and agreeing to leave each person to his/her own space, we allow them to be free.

Mercury in the Horoscope

What’s also interesting about the astrological Mercury is that, because it travels so close to the sun, the sign in which it’s placed in a horoscope is either: 1) your sun sign; 2) the sign before; or 3) the sign after.

Your sun is your conscious self. Mercury in the same sign indicates your communication matches your conscious self.

In the sign before or after, the communication style is different than your conscious self. And the sign before and after aren’t naturally compatible with the sun sign, although not entirely incompatible.

So, for example, if you have sun in Cancer, an emotional water sign, your Mercury could be in air-sign Gemini, which makes you seem more analytical and rational than you feel. Or it could be in fire-sign Leo which makes you seem confident when you actually want to crawl in your shell. With Mercury in either of these signs, you might not communicate the emotional sensitivity you experience.

So two thirds of folks have Mercury placed in sign not entirely compatible with their conscious nature.

And we trust Mercury to make our lives peaceful?

Like all planets, Mercury has its role, which (for me) is the interpretation of the living experience. We interpret through signs and symbols including language. That’s why this super-important planet that decides how we perceive is also known as a trickster planet – because signs, symbols and language are not the thing itself. It’s easy to be fooled by language and symbols and signs.

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury, being close to the sun, also appears from our earthly vantage point to travel backwards with some regularity. This is called retrograde.

When Mercury is retrograde, your astrologer will remind you that it’s not a good time to sign legal papers and you must be very careful in communication.

Yet, knowing Mercury, when is this not true?

My own thoughts are that during Mercury retrograde you simply notice more how communication is not an object, like say, a rock, and therefore can mislead, morph and dissemble. During Mercury retrograde you simply notice something you missed the first (or second or third) time.

The United States currently has a president with Geminin sun which is ruled by Mercury. The president’s Mercury, however, is in Cancer. So he may communicate more emotionally than he actually feels. And we are learning great lessons about the unreliability of communication, especially verbal language and social media snippets of thought.

Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio

This Mercury retrograde from October 31 to November 20 is in the sign of Scorpio. Scorpio is a fixed water sign. That means the emotions are strong and intense, the kind that lead to obsession.

Scorpio is also (to me) the detective of the zodiac as it understands your emotional motivations which, some believe (as I do) that these are the roots of all your behavior. What you say (Mercury) never overrules the actions for Scorpio’s assessment of your aims.

Likewise with Mercury retrograde in this sign, you may notice that others have not let go of certain emotions toward you. They said (Mercury) they forgave you but their heart did not. Or they said (Mercury) it was okay to be just friends and not lovers but they are constantly hoping you return to intimacy.

Or, also ruled by Scorpio, the money you borrowed must now be returned. They said (Mercury) that you could pay it back whenever you wished, but now they need the money. And, as any astrologer may tell you, be sure to check on those actual loans to make sure they are paid current.

If, for example, you have one of those “borrow now pay later” loans, you may find that if you didn’t pay in a specific way, you will owe a lot of interest. The loan papers will say (Mercury) that, but who understands all that tiny legal print?

Taxes are also ruled by Scorpio so be careful that you know what you are paying and what you can potentially owe.

Lastly, Scorpio rules death which is when our bodies are penetrated by the source and the “I” is removed. During Mercury retrograde, you may experience dreams of ancestors or reminders of their influence on you. For example, do you serve cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving because you like it or because the voice of your departed relative is entreating you to include it?

Mercury retrograde is Mercury in its true nature. It’s not really backwards or forwards it’s just Mercury being Mercury in one of its mercurial ways.

Trump’s Liver Year is Almost Over

Do you long for the days of yesteryear when there were days, weeks, even months without thought of the president of the United States?

Sure you saw him on television talking about this or that. You agreed or didn’t agree and went back to eating your supper.

Ah, the early 2000s!

The omnipresent, time-manipulating, attention-grabbing, energy-sucking President Trump is a symptom of a political system manipulated into decay that has finally reached a critical point. This is it, folks; we’re at the fork in the road and it’s time to make important, critical decisions.

Pluto in Capricorn is steering this path and is asking how much power and control we want to give to others in general and at this decision-making time. We agree to forfeit land so that cross-country roads can be built. But did we agree that it’s okay for corporate entities to own the genetic code for food?

Trump’s role has been to both bring all of the underlying corruption of US politics to the surface and then, counter to that, to distract so that what’s truly important must put up a strenuous fight to sustain awareness.

In past times, government kept secrets from its people; today, all information (except Trump tax returns) is available and supported or countered with additional information from supporters or opponents. Ironically, both methods have the same effect – people don’t know the truth. It’s drought or flood and neither supports a healthy crop.

One major distraction is gun control / gun rights. Against the threat of government incursion into one’s life, they are useless. How can a gun protect against ownership of genetic code? Or a polluted water supply that’s polluted far upstream? The idea that we can overthrow the government with guns is an 18th century reality and a 21st century delusion (don’t forget about the drones).

Pluto in Capricorn is about the power within the system, the power created by the system and who ultimately controls the system. Or as Shoshana Zuboff writes in The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, who decides who decides?

And for these times, one of the world’s powerful countries has a leader who does not follow the rules of any system. Clever way to evolve, it is.

Trump’s Liver Year

President Trump certainly didn’t cause the major issues that have arisen during his tenure as president – he’s clearly not clever enough to even understand them. But he’s been instrumental through his undisciplined and irresponsible nature to bring to light all that needs attention.

The fiscal year from December 2018 – December 2019 has been Trump’s “Liver Year.” Jupiter has been transiting Sagittarius which is the sign in which Trump’s moon resides. At this moment, Jupiter is now almost exactly on his moon. This is the peak of his “liverish” year.

Jupiter rules Sagittarius and the organ the liver. To be “liverish” is to be unhappy and ill-tempered, even though Jupiter and Sagittarius are generally more good natured. But both the planet and sign are associated with excess and desire for heightened awareness which sometimes includes alcohol or drugs which is how the liver gets involved. The liver must de-toxify our excesses.

Trump’s moon is opposing his natal sun and Uranus in Gemini which is flexible and fun, spontaneous and bold, uncontrolled and impulsive. Trump is an embodiment of this energy as folks not born into his wealth and privilege must exert some self-control (whether they want to or not) to survive. So others with these same aspects who live regular lives probably have to contain this energy. (As an aside, Newt Gingrich has the same sun/Uranus/moon aspects although has Saturn near his sun which may be why he is much more focused and purpose-driven intellectually than Trump).

The Liver Year Ends

Trump’s Liver Year Ends on December 3 when Jupiter moves into Capricorn, joining Saturn and Pluto in that sign. Hopefully he calms down. For Trump, planets in Capricorn land in his 5th house, the house of creativity, romance and children.

Capricorn in Trump’s chart is “intercepted” which means it’s not expressed openly. So we don’t see the sense of responsibility and discipline that is used to direct his creative life and his children. His children probably see a very different man than the one we see on television and read on Twitter.

So what happens when the Liver Year ends?

While Trump has no natal planets in Capricorn, he does have several in Cancer, the opposite sign. Trump will most likely become increasingly closer to his family. Saturn, the planet that can represent what we lack, is in Cancer in Trump’s horoscope. Trump clearly does not feel a sense of belonging to a family, which is why he probably favors our national foes more than our friends. He’s rebelling against his national “family” because he doesn’t feel he belongs (if you don’t like me, I’ll make friends elsewhere).

During the next year after Jupiter enters Capricorn, Trump may develop that sense of belonging to both his family and his party. Although Trump is a purported Republican and has certainly advanced some Republican agendas, Trump is not really one of them either.

Trump’s children are already involved in government (Pluto has been transiting Capricorn his entire presidency); Jupiter in Capricorn will probably increase their involvement.

With planets transiting the 5th, there is always a chance for more children in one’s life – either as a parent or as a grandparent.

Becoming a grandparent often brings joy. For Trump, it may not bring joy but that Capricorn feeling that time is passing and one is getting old. For a man who likes to be center of attention every minute of every day, Trump very noticeably avoids birthday attention probably because it speaks to his advancing age.

Get Some Sleep Before Jupiter Enters Capricorn

In early December 2019, Jupiter will leave fiery Sagittarius and enter earthy Capricorn. Then a few days before Christmas when the sun enters Capricorn, five of the ten “planets” in astrology will be in earth signs.

Ah, earth. You love it, right?

You live on earth, walk on earth, sleep on earth, eat earth matter, drink earth water and breathe earth air. The etheric, astrological earth energy combined with the gravitational pull of the earth will bring you fully into your earth body for enjoyment of all that is physical. You may even have the desire to build a house brick by brick with your own hands.

Or maybe not.

While we are clearly in body, we often live in our minds (air). It’s possible that we are destroying the earth because we are not connected to our bodies (which are clearly connected to the earth).

In the movie First Reformed, we meet a depressed pastor who is having severe body issues which he is ignoring. In his counseling work with a parishioner who is even more depressed than the priest over the state of the environment, the priest becomes equally concerned after seeing photos of emaciated polar bears.

The pastor could be said to represent the people of the United States – depressed and ignoring their environment. In a brief and fleeting moment, the priest even suggests that the church should play a role. The church represents the spiritual life which in astrology is represented by fire. Fire, too, can ignore the body in its spiritual quests.

If news is a measure of things, large-scale environmental issues have recently been acknowledged by a larger mass than in the last few decades. And the news is not good. We’ve been ignoring our body. The body will now provide ever stronger signals of its needs. And the year 2020 will be the expansion of that energy.

The Four Elements

The four elements of astrology – fire, earth, air and water are all part of the earth. In astrological and personality terms, fire represents spirit and energy. Those with lots of fire are energetic and forceful, extroverted and involved. In pure form, this element is drawn to performing and athletics. Fire is focused on possibilities and what could be.

Earth is practical and resourceful, restrained and reverent. Those with lots of earth energy are focused on the material, accumulation and security. Earth is focused on what things are.

Air is mental and social. Those with lots of air energy are always thinking, meeting new people, exploring places and pondering ideas. Social media is air in quality – social but not always physical yet still considered interaction. Air is focused on what things mean.

Water is emotional, reactive and protective. Those with lots of water energy are connected to the emotions of those around them, voluntarily or involuntarily. Water is affected by the energies around them and find themselves as the sounding board for other’s emotional responses. Water is focused on how things feel.

Elements in pure form become the stuff of archetypes – fire sign Broadway stars; earth sign hedge fund managers; air sign marketing gurus; and water sign health care workers.

What’s important to understand about using astrological imagery is that one solitary act can come from a number of different energies.

When a person opens an investment account, is it the earth need for a secure future? Or is it a fire desire to earn enough for sailing trip around the globe? Or is it an air sign desire to crack the nut of investing to understand how to win big? Or is the water sign need for emotional security knowing that the investments may take care of their children if something unforeseen should happen?

Although investing and money may have earth energy, the reason for investing may not. That’s the key to astrology – motivation.

Crowley on Jupiter and Saturn

Jupiter

If you like astrology, you may like other “occult” arts. If you like astrology and tarot, then the Thoth tarot deck created by Aleister Crowley may be for you.

Some astrology placements, but not all of course, are sprinkled though out the deck. It would be impossible to have all planets in all signs in a deck consisting of only 78 cards even though there are no images of the outer planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

But there are several cards that have placements of Jupiter and Saturn, Saturn at one time being the farthest planet known and symbolically the outer edges of earthly life.

Jupiter and Saturn go together in a way, although they are also opposite in a way. We can talk about them both since they will do some traveling together (called “conjunct”) in 2020, which you will hear a lot about from astrologers. Social upheaval is known to occur when these two are conjunct. The kind of upheaval depends upon the sign involved. In 2020, they will be conjunct in earth.

Jupiter and Saturn are your social world. Jupiter has a 11.5 year cycle and halfway through your first cycle you are thrown in a room with the people you will meet again some day in the office – kindergarten.

Around age five (although today sometimes sooner due to over-achieving Uranus/Pluto in Virgo parenting), you must separate from your parents and spend the day with society. If your experience was anything like mine, you encountered a bunch of new energies and habits you’d never seen before, like peeing your pants and throwing up without even trying to run to the wastebasket.

And maybe you picked on people, or were picked on; maybe it was severe, called bullying, and caused trauma. Catching a snippet of an episode of The Big Bang Theory last night, the nerdy, hyper-intelligent character Leonard and his girlfriend Penny, the pretty, bouncy actress, were discussing high school. Leonard was experiencing a bullying experience at his university post that reminded him of high school.

Penny’s response: “Oh, I’d love to do high school again.”

Was high school torture or the heavenly bliss before adult responsibility?

The Jupiter in your horoscope can indicate whether you are Leonard or Penny. Jupiter rules religious and social organizations such as schools, civic groups, church groups and interest groups, even such things as Daughters of the American Revolution. Jupiter is expansive and enthusiastic and joins.

In the mid 1960s in San Francisco, groups of people decided to take acid together in the park. Was that Jupiter? No, that was its higher self Neptune. Shared social experience is Jupiter. Shared heightened experience is Neptune.

If your parents joined a cult when you were five and you grew up in a compound dying your hair white and eating only organic vegetables, is that Jupiter? A bit. But the forced society also has elements of Pluto control. So possibly Pluto is interacting with Jupiter in your horoscope to make your social experience an excessively controlled experience.

In the Thoth tarot deck, Jupiter is the planet symbolizing the major arcana card Wheel of Fortune (tarot lesson: major arcana are the cards with archetypes; the minor arcana, more mundane events). The Wheel of Fortune goes up and down, like a slot machine. Those ruled by Jupiter (which rules Sagittarius) often like gambling and the highs it brings.

Fortune or wealth is not necessarily the result of the Wheel of Fortune – change is the result. Jupiter changes signs annually and often your life does as well. An annual period is one we use to measure our lives (especially when in Jupiter schooling). And each year can be different.

The Wheel of Fortune advises not to get caught up or on the wheel. If you get off the wheel, you will have less volatility.

Saturn

In many ways, Saturn has opposite characteristics of Jupiter although also ruling the social sphere. Saturn’s role is not the joining together for common social interests, but the controls to make sure the group follows the laws, to make sure society remains stable and in control (not that many do).

Saturn is the structure of the physical world. Imagine driving across the United States if there were no roads; if the roads didn’t have stop lights. Authority is ruled by Saturn and in a peaceful and harmonious society authority is respected – think the fictional Mayberry of The Andy Griffith Show. Sheriff Andy Taylor is wise and just and always enforces the law while simultaneously imparting lessons that earn him respect.

Yeah, fictional, but that’s what Saturn is meant to do. And The Andy Griffith Show is still playing because deep down we want virtuous authority to trust. Like the loving parents who raised us, we trust certain civic duties to others and want to respect them.

Among students of astrology, Saturn isn’t a favorite because it’s not expansive like Jupiter (go ahead, eat another cookie) or fuzzy like Neptune (let’s have a drink and plan what we would do if we won the lottery) or pleasant like Venus (let’s just forget the laundry and go to the movies).

Saturn is cautious and conservative. While Jupiter expands, Saturn contracts. Expansion seems more fun unless it’s your waistline, your credit card bill or a tumor. Saturn in these instances is rather nice. You can lose weight under a Saturn transit more easily than a Jupiter transit because Saturn also brings discipline.

Without Saturn, you would always date, never get married. Saturn is serious. It’s not the mercurial Mercury seeking new experience continuously. Saturn likes routine and consistency.

Tradition is Saturn. While many traditions are lost through space and time, it’s a human habit to recollect the past (or certain parts of the past) with nostalgia as age advances. We now remember history because we lived through it. If those young kids only understood!

In the Thoth deck, the major Arcana Universe card contains the symbol for Saturn. In researching this online, this site says the Hebrew letter on the card refers to Saturn and relates to the creation story.

Creation as the physical is definitely in the realm of Saturn. To be here, we must be matter, i.e., Saturn.

Saturn rules the sign of Capricorn which is on the major Arcana The Devil. Always a negative image in society, The Devil in imagery is actually more abstract – it’s the attachment to the material world and body that causes negative states of being. While I prefer the Rider Waite version of this card with a man and woman in chains that they could easily and simply remove, I see a similar theme in the Thoth card.

In this one, there are two spheres below our devilish goat where amorphous beings are encased and appear trying to break free. Are they trying to be free of the material world and all of its devilish distractions?

How many remember choosing to be here? Do we want to be here?

On the minor arcana four of disks called “Power” we see glyphs for sun in Capricorn. Here we have the stability and earthly power with which Capricorn is associated with this square image.

Jupiter in Capricorn

If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably already put the pieces together of Jupiter in Capricorn. You know that there will be a lot of earth energy in the coming year. There will be some water energy (Neptune in Pisces) and a sprinkling of fire and air and the inner planets (sun, moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) move through signs in those elements. But the primarily elemental energy is earth.

In the Thoth deck, the two of disks called “Change” has the glyphs for Jupiter in Capricorn.

What kind of change does it represent?

The card has the ouroboros or snake eating its own tail. This Wikipedia description is quite wonderful: The ouroboros appears elsewhere in Egyptian sources, where, like many Egyptian serpent deities, it represents the formless disorder that surrounds the orderly world and is involved in that world’s periodic renewal.

For Crowley, Jupiter in Capricorn may have represented this “formless disorder that surrounds the orderly world.”

In my country right now (and many other places) the formless disorder is quite obvious; but also, too, is the rise of authoritarianism, or severe, excessive order. Saturn is clearly order; I wouldn’t call Jupiter disorder, but it’s much more open to experience than Saturn.

When Jupiter enters Capricorn, expect even more social change (in all countries of the world). When I see Jupiter and Saturn conjunct in a person’s horoscope, I know they’ve done something outside of the parameters of their social setting – married the wrong type of person; style themselves in the “wrong” way; do things not expected of their gender; cavort with people of a different social class.

Jupiter in Capricorn will add energy to Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn and Uranus in Taurus. The changes will be physical and may involve your body, property and even your beloved teddy bear.

Worst-case scenario your teddy bear will need identification and a license and can’t leave the country with you (or enter after a vacation). Best case we hold precious certain objects but are not greedy for all objects or more and more objects.

Your boss may get bossier; in response you may want to be the boss instead and learn how much responsibility is truly involved in such an endeavor. Jupiter in Capricorn makes you “walk the talk” and live up to your own standards. If you think living up to other’s standards is difficult, you may not have examined your own.

And society will certainly play around with authoritarianism. Who wouldn’t under such intense Saturn/Capricorn energy?

And it will be time for earth peoples to decide how much authority rests in what we call government and how much responsibility each of us must take and hold if we are to dismantle authoritarian patterns. You can remove the stop signs, but you still need to stop at the intersection; that doesn’t change.

Another potential change as Pluto moves toward the sign of Aquarius is that earth peoples may fully realize that we are earth peoples. Not many countries, just one planet.

Get some sleep now because in 2020 you will be busy.

The Green Generation Smokes Neptune in Pisces

What’s your favorite palliative? What substance takes you from how you feel now to how you’d prefer to feel?

Most of us have one. What’s yours?

In the last scene of the movie Drugstore Cowboy, our main character says that when you take prescription drugs, you always know how you feel – you just need to read the label.

It’s interesting that in these times of health and wellness, there is also an opiate abuse epidemic, increase in use of anti-depressants, marijuana legalization and a spore-like growth of alcohol establishments. I hear more talk about alcohol and marijuana now than I did in college.

Is the growth of palliative substances both legal and illegal the opposite and equal reaction to a society over-emphasized on “wellness?” Or, ironically, has the emphasis on wellness created the need to constantly control how we feel? Are we pariahs when we feel unwell? Will being unwell be illegal one day?

Uranus and Pluto in Virgo

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto represent generational energies as they have long revolutions around the sun. Uranus was in Virgo from 1962 – 1969. Pluto was also in Virgo during that time as well as before and after from 1956 – 1972. People born with one or both of these planets in Virgo are in their late 40s to early 60s.

Virgo represents work, health, diet and pets. Those with Uranus and/or Pluto in Virgo brought us the awareness of health and environmental issues. They are the “Green Generation.”

Virgo is also the worry-wort of the zodiac as it’s ruled by the mental Mercury but focused on earth matters like work so often creates the workaholic, the gym rat or the person with extremely particular and discriminating dietary needs.

A generation with this aspect has helped us focus on health and wellness so that we understand a lunch of Coke and Doritos is a poor choice. However, the focus is now so extreme that you can’t eat a piece of anything without a detailed analysis of its contents. Analysis seems to have taken away the simple enjoyment of food.

This is why Virgo experiences mental strain – it can’t shut off the mind and can’t relax into experience. It can’t eat the ice cream cone without thinking about calories and a treadmill (and the shopping list and the mortgage payment and . . .).

A generation with Uranus/Pluto in Virgo tends to carry these traits, although not necessarily as individuals and they’ve created products to serve this need such as the Fitbit. As with anything Virgo, Fitbit can create awareness of how our habits affect our health but also an excessive analysis making all activity into a goal or competition with the need for perfection that keeps the mind from relaxing.

The Equal and Opposite Reaction

The opposite of Virgo is Pisces which is ruled by Neptune. Pisces is diffuse and can enjoy the ice cream cone without wondering how many carbs it contains. Pisces is imaginative, empathic and emotional.

Neptune is currently transiting its own sign of Pisces and we’re experiencing enjoyment, glamorization and increase in Neptune’s love of escapism – moving image, alcohol and drugs.

Virgo and Pisces are polarities – they need each other. We need Virgo discrimination and Pisces imagination. The excess of Virgo has released Pisces to alleviate the strain.

Astrology teaches balance in a world constantly imbalanced. There’s a constant chase for one end of a polarity and our focus on Virgo has led to an increase of Pisces. Neptune in Pisces is balancing Virgo and since Virgo is extreme, so is Pisces right now.

The response to Neptune in Pisces illegal substance abuse is often additional, legal substances – i.e., Virgo. Back and forth we go from Virgo to Pisces, one substance to another in search of Virgo perfection.

Virgo perfection may be the issue here. Maybe if we let go of perfect, we can relax and need fewer palliatives. Then when we enjoy a glass of wine or a toke of marijuana, it’s for pleasure and not need, a positive action rather than reaction.

Maybe after Neptune’s 15-year transit of Pisces in 2025 we will have thrown away our measuring devices and learned to enjoy health as a feeling state, not as a set of rules to be obeyed, steps to be measured.

Our world is also increasingly ruled by Mercury with non-stop communication, non-stop distraction and non-stop reaction.

How can you stop without a little help from Neptune in Pisces?

If we balance the Virgo, then the Pisces will balance.

Greta Thunberg: An Adult in a Child’s World

In The Simpsons episode Moaning Lisa, young, serious, ambitious Lisa Simpson is gripped by existential angst over the suffering of the world (such as the fate of coal miners in West Virginia). Her father, the immature and ignorant Homer Simpson, does what any loving father would do – he offers to bounce Lisa on his knee.

Lisa can’t be comforted with such infant-soothing acts and instead plays the sax to relieve her soul of “the blues.”

Sixteen year-old Greta Thunberg of Sweden might have chosen the same path – the saxophone or maybe medication or some other addiction that provides temporary relief and comfort. Instead she chose to challenge the world by demanding responsibility with regard to global warming.

Saturn and Capricorn

The “world” is everything you perceive and the astrological Saturn represents the boundaries of that world. In your dreams, you fly over the trees. But upon waking that is a physical impossibility – that’s Saturn.

In love, you want to merge body and soul with the person of your affection. You can merge bodies, and possibly souls, but can never be one entity. You are still two – that’s Saturn.

You’d like to just lie on the beach and “be” but people interrupt your path – you’re on private property, the beach “closes,” you have to have identification, the food you need costs “money” – that’s Saturn.

Saturn rules the sign of Capricorn. The “young” Thunberg has both her sun and moon in Capricorn. The sun is the conscious self and the moon the reactive self. A double-dose of Capricorn brings a double-dose of seriousness.

The Adult World

It’s not uncommon for those with lots of Capricorn in their charts to be seen while young as “little adults.” Thunberg, if you haven’t been reading the news, has been organizing school strikes for climate change. And she’s been effective – globally.

Being effective has put the adult-like Thunberg in the adult world of politics where she’s experiencing a “grown up” world response – character assassination.

What does a 16-year old girl know? Isn’t she supposed to be worrying about 16-year old girl things like the prom and getting into a good college? Why isn’t she giggling and expressive like a 16-year old girl should be?

Capricorn is ambitious which Thunberg is demonstrating in two ways: 1) challenging the entire world; and 2) protecting her own future. In her own leaflet words: “I am doing this because you adults are shitting on my future.” Her comments imply preservation, not altruism. She’s practical – another Capricorn trait.

Responsibility

Responsibility is what Thunberg is demanding, another keyword of Saturn and Capricorn. If you have ever organized a group of people, even for a simple dinner outing, you know that it is not easy. You’ll have discussions over venue for days, people not showing, people coming late, complaints afterward.

Now imagine planning a dinner with the entire planet. Thunberg is asking for something Capricorn extreme – she asking for a mass of people to work together across physical, mental and emotional boundaries. She’s also asking (although she doesn’t know it) for the world to reinvent its economies.

Thunberg is uber responsible, uber adult in a world where we rely on others to make decisions. So the “adults” are dismissing the “child” because the adults simply don’t know how to respond to what she is asking.

The older we get, the more “adult” we become, the less inclined we are to change. It’s the young that initiate changes. The “young” Thunberg is a double Capricorn and is representing that change now involves increased adult, responsible behavior.

There are many on the planet now who were born with Uranus in Capricorn (early-mid 1990s), Neptune in Capricorn (mid 1980s-mid 1990s) or Pluto in Capricorn (2008 to present). Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are the outer planets that represent societal shifts. As Pluto entered Capricorn in 2008, it triggered for these people the need to change society’s structures.

While we watch The Simpsons, we laugh at Homer’s ignorance. Bounce Lisa on your knee? What are you thinking? You need to talk to her, to respond, to assure her that the adults will take care of these terrible problems.

But when the young Greta Thunberg approaches the world, we have a Homer reaction. Maybe it’s time for the adults to step aside and let the “children” assume some responsibility; responsibility they want to take to preserve their own futures.

#MoneyToo

In 2006 when Jupiter was transiting Scorpio, the Me Too Movement was founded to help survivors of sexual violence. In October 2017, as Jupiter began another transit of Scorpio (it does this every 12 years for one year), the Me Too Movement went viral after allegations of sexual misconduct against movie producer Harvey Weinstein were made public.

Scorpio is a fixed water sign ruled by Pluto which has traditionally been associated with deep emotional involvement, intimacy, sex, taxes and death. That’s pretty intense stuff.

What’s the connection between sex, death and taxes?

The connection is that you are energetically penetrated by another. Taxes – who said the government could take money out of our paychecks before we receive it? Death – no more you – the universe has penetrated “you.” And sex is the physical merging of two separate entities.

When we allow penetration, it is called sex or intimacy (of course, not all sex is intimacy). When we share money, such as a joint bank account, we’re allowing our energetic earnings to be shared by another.

When Scorpio activities are unwanted, then we have crime – rape, molestation, burglary, fraud, forced entry, etc.

In 1991 when Clarence Thomas was being confirmed as a Supreme Court justice, law professor Anita Hill accused him of sexual misconduct. In 1991 (when Pluto was transiting Scorpio) as in 2006 and 2017 we find that it’s quite common for females to have experienced threatening, unwanted sexual advances.

Focusing on sexual assault is highly important for women. Yet, astrology can teach us that focusing on sexual assault only may be only half of the equation.

Money

In the horoscope, there are twelve “houses” or areas of life. The 8th house is where Scorpio energies play. If you have sun the 8th house, you probably are an intimate person who loves emotional connection and sharing. Yet if you have Saturn in the 8th, in contrast, intimacy and sharing are an issue.

Opposite the 8th house is the 2nd house – a polarity. So if the 8th house is intimacy, the 2nd house is physical separateness. The 8th house is joint finances; the 2nd personal finances and where we are self-reliant. The 8th house is death; the 2nd house, the physical body.

The second house is ruled by Taurus/Venus. In my mind, Taurus is ruled by the earth itself and represents physical life, physical property and self-reliance. Through those activities, we define our values.

Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein could get away with 8th house crimes because of 2nd house wealth. These energies are connected. Had they been poor, they might have faced justice much sooner.

Women’s focus on sexual rights is important, but misses the connection of financial influence. As women gain more 2nd house economic parity, they will have more chance of successfully fighting 8th house sexual issues.

In addition to focus on sexual rights, women should also focus on increasing wealth among women and for labor draws a high percentage of females. Otherwise, we’ll be talking about this again every 12 years when Jupiter transits Scorpio.

Pluto and Political Authority Figures

In the early 1990s while working in a bank, it was common on Monday morning to have phone calls from disgruntled weekend customers who had an unpleasant experience at the bank over the weekend and a day and a half to stew in their grievances.

The calls would be fielded by the administrative assistants, most of whom were female. The calls would take a long time, as people call to vent frustration as much as solve problems. Bringing a lengthy session of complaint to an end could be difficult, especially when bank protocol had been followed and the caller would not have the resolution they desired (i.e., you overdrew your account, accept it).

How did we get them off the phone?

As my experienced female colleague advised, send them to a man. Male is the voice of authority, she said, and the caller will accept a negative judgment much more easily.

The Sign of Authority

The astrological sign that represents authority is Capricorn. Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn.

Capricorn is ambitious and embraces hard work and responsibility to achieve the success it desires. The ultimate need of Capricorn is respect. Failure and humiliation are its worst nightmares.

In its most negative, Capricorn is known to claw its way to the top using others with complete lack of feeling (i.e., the end justifies the means). In its most positive, Capricorn is willing to do the difficult work others avoid to achieve a goal like the American “self-made man.”

When Pluto entered Capricorn in late 2007, this planet of evolution began its re-molding of our relationship to authority and social structures. First thing Pluto did was to destroy the financial system. You might think this hyperbole but that’s exactly what happened. It was the governments of the world that patched up the gaping holes and told us that everything was back to normal.

It’s interesting to watch humanity in these trying times where solutions to global problems must cross nations. While we could all list a thousand things we’d like to see change in our world, when there is a shift we seem to want a return to normal, to the way “it was.”

Pluto evolves so the “normal’ we want to return to no longer exists.

The Way We Were

From the time we are born into this earth, we are taught to respect and idolize male authority ¬- religious figures, historical figures, war heroes, sports heroes. Bold statement, I know, but I believe it covers most of the globe except for small, moribund cultures that are able to exist as pockets within a larger, global culture.

When I say we idolize male authority, I don’t mean this as a “man against woman” type of thing. We all share in the culture. While women might feel devalued because of this, it also puts undue pressure on males to be superheroes and a host of other male authority figures. Any gender preference is bad for both genders.

Siri and Alexa, our digital assistants, both have female voice. Can we imagine our personal, digital assistants with male voice?

In 2008, the United States elected its first African-American president, a great cultural shift, yet still within the realm of male authority. In 2016, the pendulum swung the other way and any gains made from 2008-2016 appear to be temporarily if not irreparably lost. The maleness we returned to was from the Western movies of the 1950s – bold, daring, fearless and unapologetic.

As we go into the 2020 election season, we have a great mix of candidates in age, gender, sexual preference and heritage. Yet for all the options, the top candidates are older males – current Republican president Donald Trump at 73 and Democratic contender Joe Biden at 76 (soon to be 77).

Some Democratic candidate runners up include female contender Elizabeth Warren age 70 and the ever-present Bernie Sanders at 77 (soon to be 78).

The 2020 Democratic candidate pool is full of bright-eyed and bushy-tailed youngsters who want the torch to be passed, who want to change the world and who have fire in the belly.

Why don’t we want them?

Authority and age also have a relationship as aging could and should make us wise. There was a time, not long ago in human history, when most did not live into their 70s.

That a digital world focused on the growth and maturity of millennials would choose a leader from a generation that normally would be in retirement says something for the staying power of traditional authority – male (mostly), older and experienced.

Pluto is challenging us to evolve our social structures. Pluto is associated with destruction because that is usually the only way that humans let go of dysfunctional and decaying patterns. We haven’t let go of the old ideas of authority. They are still with us.

Do we really want the change we claim to want?

Traditionally younger presidential contenders were faced with criticisms of inexperience. But post Trump, experience shouldn’t matter.

Female Authority

Although many want to see a female in the White House, I’ve been betting against females since 2008 and winning. I will bet against a female presidential candidate in 2020. Unless we embrace Pluto and truly become open to change, a female president ain’t gonna happen.

Researching females in power (Venus in Power), I was surprised to find how few are truly elected to become heads of state. Women are losing ground, not gaining ground in the global political arena as several female leaders have been deposed in recent years such as Brazil’s Dilma Rousseff  (in 2016). Brazil now has the Trump-like Jair Bolsonaro (age 64) as leader.

Pluto in Capricorn is challenging the traditional authority. Yet our choices in reaction to this challenge seem to be bringing the old guard back, not the new, fresh faces that want to direct the course of our future.

What will we do when our aging authority passes on? Then what?

Pluto in Capricorn until 2025

Pluto will be in Capricorn until 2024 – 2025 (in its last phase, it will bounce between Capricorn and Aquarius for a while). At the end of this year (2019), Jupiter will pass into Capricorn and join Saturn in Capricorn for its last year of Capricorn transit. Jupiter and Saturn transiting together create social changes. Add Pluto and those changes become more intense and forced.

That means, my friends, we will have to face the challenges of authority whether we want to or not. As Pluto enters Aquarius in 2025 we may see cultural changes involving egalitarianism. In the past century and a half, any talk of egalitarianism was branded socialism or communism which meant we couldn’t talk about it.

It’s Time to Clean Your (Earth) Room!

On this day, August 31, 2019, the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars are all in the sign of Virgo. These five astrological “planets” represent half of what you find in your horoscope. Virgo is a mutable earth sign associated with work, health, diet and pets.

If you enjoy these types of activities, you should enjoy the energy:

  • Doing crossword puzzles
  • Researching and buying health supplements
  • Arranging your closet, including shoes
  • Cooking dinner after researching dozens of recipes to construct the perfectly-balanced meal
  • Deep cleaning your dwelling
  • Organizing the spice cabinet
  • Fostering 100 animals
  • Worrying about your health
  • Worrying about work
  • Worrying about the bills
  • Exercising
  • Working (regular job)
  • Working (volunteer activities)
  • Working (pet project)
  • Working (to do what others left undone)

See, Virgo is ruled by Mercury the planet that represents our mind, how we think, how we perceive and how we communicate. Gemini, an air sign, is also ruled by Mercury and represents its more pure, intellectual state.

Virgo, being an earth sign, focuses the mental energy on practical, daily matters. Virgo is planning dinner right now, and not necessarily just tonight’s meal. Those pills cases with seven slots for each day of the week were probably invented by a Virgo. Shoe organizers, purses with sections, health apps – think Virgo.

To manage our lives on earth, a bit of Virgo energy is needed. As all of the personal planets are currently in Virgo, the universe appears to be asking us to pay attention to the immediate details of our lives whether we enjoy it or not.

Time to clean.

Earth Energy

Of the other five planets in the horoscope – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto – three are in earth signs. Uranus is in Taurus (fixed earth) and Saturn and Pluto are in Capricorn (cardinal earth). There are just three earth signs – Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. We got ’em all now.

While the personal planets (sun, moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) will move into many signs in the next couple years as they have short cycles, the transpersonal planets of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto will be predominantly in earth signs for the next couple years.

Once again, the energies are demanding a focus on the physical aspects of our existence. If you have lots of air and fire in your horoscope, these times may seem to be a bit of a drag, always focused on The Serious and Responsibility. Emojis won’t help.

But it takes the air and fire energy to bring innovation and inspiration to these physical demands. All energies on deck!

Currently the only planet in fire is Jupiter which will move to Capricorn this December 2019. Enjoy the autumn as this is the last little bit of transpersonal planet fire that we’re going to get for a few years. Jupiter brings hope and enthusiasm, difficult energies to maintain in trying times.
